Hello mums: I'm so happy I stumbled upon this website! Reading your posts on Brussels areas and schools has been most helpful. However, I still have some questions outstanding and not sure how to resolve - esp. since we have very little time. Planning to move in August from NYC, start new job (and school for kids, hopefully...) in September. I assume schools are closing soon and now trying to figure out how to secure a place for my 2 boys, ages 2.5 and 4 years. We were hoping to live in Ixelles, but I understand schools are hit-or-miss there. On the other hand, we are talking about maternelle - does it really matter that much? The house we are considering is on Rue du Bourgmestre. The closest school is Catteau-Aurore, but when I called they said no way we could get in. Do you know of any other schools close by? How do I find out? We prefer public french speaking maternelle, but would consider dutch speaking and international also. Alternatively we could decide to live further out if it's easier to find schools there. I work near VUB and my husband's office is in Schumann. So i guess Ixelles would be ideal... any advice you can give would be much appreciated!

Hi, not sure if you are still looking for info - you should settled in Bxl by now - but you may wish to try the Saint Andre & Saint Philippe school, not far from the Catteau-Aurore school, though they too have waiting lists & co. This is their website (not very useful as it does not seem to be regularly updated, but you have their contact details there)

You can also try at the "ecole communale" Ecole n° 5 - Groupe scolaire des Etangs, or the Ecole n° 12 - Groupe scolaire Les Jardins d'Elise. Both are public schools not far from the VUB/Ixelles area you mention. This is a link to the official page of the "commune" of Ixelles, where all public primary schools are listed: http://www.elsene.irisnet.be/site/fr/02vivrexl/grandir/ensefondam.htm

For a more comprehensive list, which includes Catholic & private schools, you can also look here: http://www.enseignement.be/index.php?page=25932 It's a search engine on the official page of the Ministry of francophone education. You can, for example, fill in the field where "code postal" is requested (it is 1050 for Ixelles), or simply type in the name of the commune which interests you and a list of schools present on the territory will appear.

Good luck and let us know how it went!
