Chat thread for Dundee MNetters - come and say hello

Hello, I thought it would be good to have a place where we could introduce ourselves, and find out where we are all based (in a very general way, please don't post addresses or phone numbers on the board).

I am based in the West End, and am mum of two kids, my daughter is 10yo and my son is 8yo. I am a freelance writer and blogger. I am the Local Editor of Mumsnet Dundee, so if you have any questions about Mumsnet, feel free to PM me (private message).

For those who are completely new to MN, I wanted to add some basic advice on Mumsnet and how to find your way around.

To begin with, [[http://local.mumsnet.com/info/acronyms ]]here is the acronym list and the Frequently Asked Questions - do have a read through them to find your feet.

Mumsnet is a site for parents, and we do allow people to speak their minds, so if you ask a question you will get an honest answer - sometimes it might be too honest for you, especially if you post in Am I Being Unreasonable (AIBU). Personal attacks are however not allowed, so if someone is mean to you, report it to MNHQ. (this is aimed at usage of the main site, not so much in Local, where I hope things will be more local based fun than bun fights!).

If you are new to Mumsnet, do have a look around but lurk on AIBU and chat till you find your feet and know what we are about.

Finally, I will say that although this may sound as if we are a scary bunch, we are also incredibly supportive. To get an idea of what we can achieve when we get together, check out the Woolly Hugs website, where MNetters show the blankets they have made for MNetters who have lost a child or a husband.

Hi, I'm in Carnoustie, with 3 DDs, and a DH who works away most of the week. It is blooming freezing here today, and I am thinking about putting the heating on. Need to toughen up I think. blush

Pehsandbridies Thu 17-Jan-13 20:07:04

I am in Maryfield, have a DH & DD, work PT and like cake!

TeaAndTunnocks Fri 18-Jan-13 11:27:20

It's really cold now, isn't it? Am hoping the snow stays off till we've picked DH up from the airport tonight.

We were thinking of another meet up, if anyone is interested.

Pehsandbridies Sun 20-Jan-13 18:48:40

I would love another meet up, count me in.

TeaAndTunnocks Mon 21-Jan-13 13:10:36

Have just realised that DH has booked to come over that weekend, so at least I don't have to worry about getting a babysitter.

Pehsandbridies Mon 21-Jan-13 13:33:43

Is there actually a date set? I can't find anything in the meet up section?

TeaAndTunnocks Mon 21-Jan-13 16:06:32

Will put it up now - we don't have confirmation of the place yet, but will add that later.

TeaAndTunnocks Mon 21-Jan-13 16:44:18

Ok, not working at the moment.

We have agreed on the evening of 1st February. The venue still to be decided

Pehsandbridies Wed 23-Jan-13 20:38:01

Just realised that DH is working late shift so I won't make it sad Have a great time.

TeaAndTunnocks Thu 24-Jan-13 12:32:24

oh, no. That is a shame.

Snow report from the West End. Still a bit here, but it snows then thaws then snows again. I have to say that the guys from the council have been great. They were in our wee cul de sac today, gritting the roads. I went over and thanked them and they were so chuffed cause they thought I was coming over to complain. Poor sods.

TeaAndTunnocks Thu 24-Jan-13 20:26:42

Right. We have confirmation of the meet up.

We thought we'd meet for wine and nibbles at Lovely Things.

Here is the deal. Lynne provided drinks and snacks, we get to sit and chat, and browse. There is absolutely no pressure to buy anything but if you can resist, you are a better woman than me

Feb 1st February from 6pm to 8pm

NotatallSnootie Fri 25-Jan-13 13:38:07

OOh, the DDs are swimming then. I could drop them off and pop in for a while... I've been meaning to visit that shop since DB and DH started buying me presents from there!

TeaAndTunnocks Fri 25-Jan-13 22:05:26

That would be great. It is just across the road.

We are officially snowed in. I cannot get the car out, and am not willing to try - I did bribe the gritter guy with Lindor chocs today though.

I am buying winter tyres for next winter.

TeaAndTunnocks Mon 28-Jan-13 13:18:46

Facebook competition for you to win coffee and cake at your favourite cafe.

Please share with your friends.

TeaAndTunnocks Wed 06-Feb-13 12:52:53

Just resurrecting the chat thread. Are you all stocked up for the weekend?

I somehow managed to not notice that it was a long weekend - was totally taken aback on Monday when DS mentioned that they wouldn't be at school Thurs to Mon.

SparklesInTheFerry Wed 06-Feb-13 20:10:20

You were taken aback on Monday.....I had it in the back of my head hat they were off, but had a rant about dd going out tonight as it's a school night....words eaten!

TeaAndTunnocks Thu 07-Feb-13 10:07:20

Whoops, Sparkles.

Is it In Service Day all over Dundee then? What are you guys up to?

I have a German window fitter here to measure my windows. Good to speak some German again.

SparklesInTheFerry Thu 07-Feb-13 15:24:26

I could tell you but I'd have to kill you! Nah just the super exciting stuff of food shopping, but it's dh's birthday tomorrow so the baking's about to start!

SparklesInTheFerry Thu 07-Feb-13 15:25:55

I also need to make a curtain for the upstairs hall and a new coat for the dog out of an old coat of ds's. Which is why I'm faffing about on the Internet grin

TeaAndTunnocks Thu 07-Feb-13 19:12:34

you sound like a handy woman to have around. Baking cakes and sewing dog coats. I had visions of the dog looking a bit like [[ http://nisabell-necessary.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/sound-of-music-curtain-clothes.html this]]

BalgayHill Fri 08-Feb-13 12:11:13

Hi there. I live in Dundee and have a 10 year old son. I've never posted on the local board before. It's great to see that it's up and running.

Thanks TandT.

Looks like I've missed a meet up though.

I'm enjoying a long weekend but have to get off my backside and do some cleaning as we've got visitors coming. If I can tear myself away from MN that is.

TeaAndTunnocks Fri 08-Feb-13 15:39:20

Hi BalgayHill. You are not far from me. I will be watching for the MN scarf at school pick up times. smile

How about we try for another meet up? Is daytime or evening better for everyone?

I have a wee competition starting on Facebook today if anyone is interested, go have a look.

BalgayHill Fri 08-Feb-13 15:53:41

Oh, I'm not near Balgay Hill anymore but was brought there or thereabouts and spent a lot of my youth running up and down it during cross country and drinking sly bottles of Merrydown with my friends. grin

I am in Dundee though.

Evening is better for me as I work but could finish early and come and meet everyone lateish afternoon?
I'll just try and fit in with what's decided. Am really glad you replied, I thought I'd killed another thread.

BalgayHill Fri 08-Feb-13 15:53:59

brought up

TeaAndTunnocks Fri 08-Feb-13 16:06:59

ha. We used to sneak off to a friend's house to watch Neighbours during cross country running sessions.

<boak> at the though of Merrydown - it was drunk with blackcurrant back in the day, before we had alcopops.

I think most of the others are keen on evenings too, so will set one up in a couple of weeks. Don't want to do too short notice, so that everyone has time to get babysitters.

here is the FB competition.

I love the soup in a bag idea, and they were posting meal in a bag pics today. Looked totally yummy.

BalgayHill Fri 08-Feb-13 16:24:20

We must have been hard core then, Merrydown with no mixer. grin

God the thought of it now makes me shudder.

Looking forward to a meet up and will keep an eye on the thread.

Soup in a bag is brilliant. I made a spicy veg soup from one and it was delicious. Pretty much anything that's nice and easy but doesn't involve horses is great.

TeaAndTunnocks Fri 08-Feb-13 16:46:44

Would you be a love and C&P that comment onto the Listing. It made me laugh.

Probably better to go without the blackcurrant. We gave my 15yo cousin a couple of pints on my henny night and my aunt's carpet never recovered.

TeaAndTunnocks Fri 08-Feb-13 16:47:50

here is the listing to save you searching

When do your guests arrive?

BalgayHill Fri 08-Feb-13 16:57:45

They'll be here in about half an hour. I still haven't cleaned the bathroom. I'm trying to watch the Good Wife, read and MN which is slowing me down a bit.

TeaAndTunnocks Fri 08-Feb-13 17:14:22

SparklesInTheFerry Sat 09-Feb-13 11:22:36

My grandparents used to live on the side of Balgay Hill! In Saggar Street...in the coldest house known to humankind grin it was a long time ago though!

TandT I do have my uses, but fortunately for the dog it's just plain green, and not quite what you were imagining! I've actually just asked the Dundee Mn head honcho on FB where on the local site I should blab about what I do-fingers crossed there will be an appropriate place and I can prove to the husband that al the faffing about I do is profitable rather than costing us!

TeaAndTunnocks Mon 11-Feb-13 20:54:36

<ahem> That would be me, the MN Head Honcho smile

I might as MNHQ if I can have business cards made up with that on it.

How did your weekend go? Guests all happy?

We had a fun filled weekend, with a disappearing doggie and a distraught daughter. Pooch escaped on Sat evening and by the time I thought to call the police, she'd been moved to Brown Street. They are closed all weekend, so we weren't able to pick her up till this morning.

She hasn't moved from her spot by the heater all day. Think it was a bit chilly in Brown Street sad

BalgayHill Mon 11-Feb-13 22:17:43

Oh no, that's horrible. Hope your DD and the dog are recovering.

Guests were quite happy ( I think ), loo was shining bright. grin

We've had a lovely, long weekend. Just wish it was a whole week but possibly that's just being greedy.

I'm half watching Robin Hood with Russell Crowe at the moment - it's so bad it's good. The accents are hilarious.

Just got my fingers crossed for no more snow this week.

TeaAndTunnocks Tue 12-Feb-13 15:56:27

I was just saying to cousin who lived down saaaaaaaaaarf, that their half-term is much better than ours. Wish we got a week off rather than a long weekend.

Glad that your guests were fun.

I am spending the afternoon at the hairdressers, so watch for a review later. I'm having a hair straightening treatment done - it is more smoothing than straightening actually. I had it done last year and loved it. It is a long time to sit though, cause I am having the colour and cut done at the same time.

BalgayHill Tue 12-Feb-13 18:21:54

I would love to have a straightening treatment done. My hair is really curly and I waste hours straightening it. Where are you getting it done?

TeaAndTunnocks Tue 12-Feb-13 20:06:44

At McIntyres. It cost me a fortune today, but that was with cut and colour too. It is this system although I didn't pay £200. Not sure what the Kebelo alone was, but I think about £160. Officially it lasts about 3 months, but I would say it lasted a lot longer than that. I had it done last June and I would say that it was fine till about end of October, then gradually got less smooth. That might be because my hair is reasonably straight, with just a slight wave.

BalgayHill Wed 13-Feb-13 07:48:39

I really must get a proper haircut. I've been hacking at it myself for ages. I'm not sure exactly why but I'm pretty scared of the hairdresser - no bad experience but just really don't enjoy it.

It's bloody snowing here again. Anyone else?

TeaAndTunnocks Wed 13-Feb-13 09:12:26

I really like McIntyres, it is trendy without being scary, if you know what I mean. The staff are really friendly. I like it when a salon has the same staff over a long time - you feel like they must be good to their staff and they enjoy working there. One salon I used to go to in Germany was horrible - the boss stalked around sniping at people and being sarcastic about their work. The woman who cut my hair was lovely but I couldn't stand being around her boss.

She eventually opened her own salon and took all her customers with her, and a couple of the staff smile

Yes, snowing here too. Loads of it. Forecast to be 8degrees tomorrow.

Anyone know where the degree sign is on a UK keyboard?

TeaAndTunnocks Wed 13-Feb-13 09:20:51

I am hoping there are some lurkers out there, wondering if they should join in the chat.

Don't be shy, just jump in.

WrongSideoftheBridge Wed 13-Feb-13 10:17:29

I'll jump in. Am currently sitting in my jammies, really bored! DD is making a tent and DS is playing on his mat. I am surplus to requirements already. <puts kettle on>

The best haircut I've ever had was last summer at Suzanne Duncan. It sat perfectly for months and everybody commented on it. And it was with a Groupon voucher too.

TeaAndTunnocks Wed 13-Feb-13 10:52:33

I am wasting time on MN when I should be doing something, but the snow is laming me

TeaAndTunnocks Wed 13-Feb-13 11:00:32

Er. I wasn't even finished posting. What happened there?

It is really snowing heavily here. Please tell me that the other side of the bridge has some snow too. I feel bad that you lot don't get any

WrongSideoftheBridge Wed 13-Feb-13 14:47:29

Yes, plenty today!!

We were going to see a (possible) new house but the vendor has cancelled. On the upside, it doesn't look like I'll be able to get to Weightwatchers...

I hate this username! I thought I read somewhere we can use our usual names on local now?

BalgayHill Wed 13-Feb-13 18:10:43

I might PM you TandT and get the name of your stylist - it might sound like I know what I'm talking about!

Snow has been so bad today. I work at the other end of town from where I live and ended up having to get a bus home. Pretty scary, it was skidding and sliding when it was trying to stop.

Hope everyone else is home safely.

TeaAndTunnocks Thu 14-Feb-13 11:04:46

Annoying for you, Otherside. Can you see the house a different day?

There are no fewer than 4 houses in our scheme on the market at the moment. One of them seems to have been repossessed and is being sold by a finance company for at least £30k under normal asking price for similar houses. Weirdly, the survey is very low too - am sure there is something dodgy about it. It has new kitchen, bathroom, flooring etc.

Wonder why the owners didn't sell it themselves. It went on the market and was immediately under offer. Not surprising at that price.

I think MNHQ can change the username for you, if you PM them.

Snow is almost gone now, just a lot of slush and dirt. We saw 2 cars stuck in the ditch and one small accident when we were on our way home from school yesterday. I walked rather than take the car out.

carnoustiemum Tue 19-Feb-13 09:20:02

hello, I'm a carnoustie mummy of two beautiful (and slightly exhausting) girls. Always looking for things to do to amuse them, so this site is so important! It's amazing how many places you discover about that no one's ever told you about! Currently have a four year old leaning over me so she can go on cbeebies site! The joys! Also a kitten jumping on me, someone remind me why I got a kitten again, seemed like a good idea at the time......Any tips on keeping a 6 month old, 4 year old and a badly behaved kitten, gratefully received!

TeaAndTunnocks Thu 21-Feb-13 18:37:57

Hi Carnoustiemum,

I remember just after we got our puppy thinking WHY THE HELL DID I DO THIS? but it did get better.

How are you all doing? Did you read about that poor girl who was assaulted last night? Not far from my house, so a bit scary.

Pehsandbridies Thu 21-Feb-13 20:49:10

Hello, all well here!

So scary about the girl, and a wee boy has gone missing from his home too. Just awful.

TeaAndTunnocks Thu 21-Feb-13 22:39:32

Hadn't heard about the wee boy, Peh. Where was that then? How awful.

TeaAndTunnocks Fri 22-Feb-13 16:02:24
TeaAndTunnocks Fri 01-Mar-13 22:24:49

How are you all doing? Wasn't the weather glorious today? My mum invited me into town for coffee. We were at the new Cafe Borsa behind the museum. It is really nice, and great if you are going in with a pram cause lots of space.

I noticed they had live music on tonight. Might go sometime when we have a babysitter.

BalgayHill Fri 01-Mar-13 22:27:10

Thought I should post because I saw the thread in Chat.

Still haven't been for my haircut yet, mainly because my hair is such a mess I am a bit embarrassed.

Hope everyone is well.

You're doing a great job TandT.

TeaAndTunnocks Fri 01-Mar-13 22:33:07

There we are. Job done smile

Go get your hair cut if you want it done. What style are you going for? Or do you want a restyle?

BalgayHill Fri 01-Mar-13 22:40:39

Probably a restyle but having been cutting it myself for ages so it's pretty raggedy at the moment. Luckily it's longish and curly so only really shows when I straighten it.
I love my hair straight so am thinking just shoulder length but also with a fringe. I will have to leave it for a couple of weeks because I just cut my fringe last weekend and it's wee bit wonky.

I'm painting a lovely picture of myself I know. grin

TeaAndTunnocks Fri 01-Mar-13 22:54:00

haha all the more reason to hot foot it to the hairdresser. They have seen folk who've chopped at their hair before. Don't worry about it. Do you have to straighten it then?

I always wanted curls.

BalgayHill Fri 01-Mar-13 23:11:39

Definitely has to be straightened.

I am going to get my finger out and make an appointment though.

If there is a meet up in the meantime I won't have to tell anyone my name, I'll be the one with the dodgy hair.

TeaAndTunnocks Fri 01-Mar-13 23:18:59

I am off to Germany for 2 weeks next week, but if someone wants to organise a meet up while I am away, I will cry into my wine that would be fine.

I have the PILs coming on Wednesday, and have to get the house PIL-acceptable

BalgayHill Fri 01-Mar-13 23:30:41

PIL -acceptable? grin

That should be a proper category in the tidiness of homes. At the moment my house is neither family or visitor friendly.

Hope you have a lovely time in Germany. I've only ever been to Munich. I worked in Austria for a while and travelled through Munich a few times and always wanted to spend a bit more time there.

MyNameIsAlexDrake Fri 01-Mar-13 23:45:30

Hello local people!

I've only just found this thanks to the current post on Chat smile

I've a 7 month old boy, making the most of my last few weeks before going back to work (thankfully part time). Been loving this glorious weather we've had most of the week, even though it is still cold its so nice to see the sun again, have managed to get some good long walks in with the pram - trying to shift some of the lbs before squeesing back into my work clothes!

TeaAndTunnocks Fri 01-Mar-13 23:58:31

My FIL is a real stickler for everything being just right. My parents are on Operation Siegfried too. Mum is sending dad around the house to stick the wallpaper down properly and mend broken lamps.

Am going to Munich. DH has been living there for the past year, and is moving over so will be helping pack up.

Hello Alex, and welcome to Dundee Local. That is good, that you are able to go back part time. Especially coming into the nice weather. It was really spring-like today wasn't it.

BalgayHill Sat 02-Mar-13 08:13:14

Your DH has been working away for a year? That must have been difficult to say the least. Hope the move goes well TandT.

Hi Alex. I used to walk for miles with DS when I was on maternity leave. It's a bit of a thought going back isn't it? Although I did find working a bit easier than being at home. blush

The weather is amazing just now. My friend has just come over from Paris and thinks Dundee is an oasis of fine weather. grin

TeaAndTunnocks Sat 02-Mar-13 10:07:18

It's not been easy. He was flying over a couple of times a month so at least he's not away for months and months like in the forces. And he's in Munich, not Afghanistan. So I don't like to complain.

Will be glad to have him back. Mostly. wink

I hope the weather holds for another week. Would be great if it were like this for PILs visit.

Off to the Ferry this afternoon and nip into Jessie's Kitchen for coffee and Tunnocks Brownies.

What are you all up to? Are you doing tourist stuff with your friend, balgay?

BalgayHill Sat 02-Mar-13 10:15:04

Yes, we're going to Edinburgh today and St Andrews tomorrow. Just getting ready now.

We haven't been to the Ferry this visit so that will be another thing to do. She really loves Dundee which I find a little strange - she lives in Paris after all!

Hope you have a good day. Tunnocks brownies sound amazing.

TeaAndTunnocks Sat 02-Mar-13 12:09:43

Someone just tweeted to say there is a craft fair in Roseangle Cafe Arts, so am going to pop in there on the way past.

Edinburgh and St Andrews is a great day out. Love the drive through Fife. We always stop at the big hotel on the outskirts - the new posh one on the hill. St Andrews Bay I think it is called. Park at the club house for a fab view of St Andrews

TeaAndTunnocks Sun 03-Mar-13 12:29:08

Virtual [brownies] for all today. How are you all doing?

We had a fab day yesterday. Managed to bag the VERY LAST Tunnocks Brownie in Jessie's Kitchen so that was a big win. And it had fallen apart so they didn't charge me for it. Double win.

Lovely walk around the Ferry, popped in to the pet shop to talk to them about MN Local and adding their listing. They don't have an email address, much less a website or FB page. She said they had only just recently replaced their old phone, with the circular dial grin

Errolite Mon 04-Mar-13 06:50:54

Good morning all, been AWOL for a while, not been doing too much too exciting though sadly!

Balgay, my fil was visiting on Sat, we took him up dundee Law, the view was stunning!

TeaAndTunnocks Mon 04-Mar-13 09:30:27

Morning Errol. (that sounds rather dashing!)

The weekend was a good day for views and visitors, wasn't it? Have you all seen the lovely Scotland ad that keeps popping up on the main site? It featured a pic of Dundee, and the Rail Bridge, and it got me quite excited to think that the tourist board are actually properly promoting Dundee.

It is such a lovely city really, and so overlooked. Once we have the V&A, it will really boost the city. I've already noticed that you hear more forrin voices about the town.

We had a quiet weekends, did a bit of tester paint pot shopping, and now have patches of colour all around the house. It is amazing how different the colours look on the wall. Dulux have an offer on - 3 pots for £2 when you order online so have done that to get the perfect shade.

CrystalQueen Mon 04-Mar-13 20:01:03

Just swinging by to check out the revamped local site - shiny! Hi to all fellow Dundonians. I live in sunny Menzieshill with my DD (4) and my husband (slightly older than 4).

TeaAndTunnocks Mon 04-Mar-13 22:03:31

Hi there Crystal. How are you doing? I don't live far from you. Is your DD going to school this year?

CrystalQueen Mon 04-Mar-13 23:04:46

I'm trying really hard not to think about it! She's really looking forward to school - we live quite close to Hillside primary and she's spotted the out door stuff they have there.

TeaAndTunnocks Mon 04-Mar-13 23:35:06

That is where our kids go. They are really happy there.

The new sensory garden is great, and they have been told they can learn outside in the summer.

Errolite Fri 15-Mar-13 11:09:04

Just wanted to let you all know that the Errol fun run is on on Sunday from midday, incase anyone is feeling energetic?!?

TeaAndTunnocks Sat 23-Mar-13 11:40:47

In case you are all confused where your Dundee site has gone - see this thread
