The North Middlesex maternity service has been announced as the Bio Oil Team of the Year, presented at the Royal College of Midwives annual award ceremony this month, the only London Trust to win a national award.
The maternity teams application focused on engaging the hearts and minds of staff and patients in order to provide a better working life and the best experience possible to mothers at every stage of pregnancy and birth.
This engagement drive includes:
Involving all members of the team in developing a service vision that will provide the best possible care for mothers
Reinforcing good practice and behaviour of staff through an internal awards programme
Innovative initiatives based on womens feedback including the mothers for mothers scheme that involves women volunteers providing informal advice to new mothers about breastfeeding and other common practical issues
The introduction of daily CARE rounds by midwives that ask women what they would score their care out of ten and whether they would recommend the service to a friend.
In July 2012, 100% of women asked said that they would recommend the North Middlesexs maternity service to a friend.
Fiona Laird, Head of Midwifery, said: We are absolutely delighted to win this national award, which is in recognition of the excellent care that our midwifery and maternity team provide to mothers and families.
"That our peers see us as the best midwifery team in the country is great news for the women of Enfield and Haringey.
Investment in a new Womens and Childrens Centre opening in November 2013, to implement local hospital changes outlined in the Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Clinical Strategy, will provide an environment fit for the first rate service we already provide to local women.
"We won't rest on our laurels and will continue to listen to, and work, with staff and mothers so that our service keeps evolving to meet local health need and help us ensure we provide the best care possible to the increased numbers of women coming to the North Middlesex."
