having just moved to Exeter I need to make new friends.....would anyone like to join me for a book club involving meeting once a month in a pub (weatherspoons in town?) to maybe read a book that we all choose or talk about books we've read and drink several glasses of wine, beer etc

E4EM Fri 27-Jan-12 14:41:11

Hi bbbiscuits,

I'm new to Exeter too. Moved here at the end of November with my hubby and 22 month old son. Have always fancied being part of a book club and keen to meet some new people, so I might be interested. What sorts of books are you into?

Theyda Fri 27-Jan-12 22:45:19

This would be something I would be interested in joining also. I moved to Exeter years ago but still don't know anyone here as I work in a small company and don't really get much chance to meet people, plus I'm a big fan of reading and I'm always looking for things that aren't my usual thing.

bbbiscuits Sat 28-Jan-12 19:40:14

Great to have some replies! I'll read anything that's not too scary.

Must admit my main motive is to make a few friends and have a glass or two of wine .

What night of the week would be best for you?

Theyda Mon 30-Jan-12 10:11:31

As far as I go then most nights are fine for me, only the occasional Tuesday which isn't

E4EM Mon 30-Jan-12 13:54:24

Thursdays are probably the best for me, although other nights are possible with enough warning. I agree, making friends and drinking wine sound like enough motivation... but the books provide a good excuse to request babysitting!

Theyda Wed 01-Feb-12 12:48:32

Thursdays would be fine for me

bbbiscuits Fri 03-Feb-12 21:32:42

Thursday next week? 8pm weatherspoons? smile

Theyda Fri 03-Feb-12 22:59:49

Sounds good to me, which Weatherspoons? The big one near St.Davids or a different one?

E4EM Sun 05-Feb-12 20:02:04

When you say next Thursday, do you mean this week (9th)? If so, that would be great! What time suits you both? And how will we know each other?!

E4EM Sun 05-Feb-12 20:02:53

Sorry, just saw that you said 8pm. That suits me smile

bbbiscuits Sun 05-Feb-12 21:56:11

The one in south street in town? Rather selfishly it is good for me! Also think I remember one of you lives in heavitree so maybe good for you? Happy to go the other one though if you want to? In the south street one There's some tables upstairs which are a bit quieter. Through main door turn to the right upstairs and I'll bring a book to put on the table! Have dark hair....

bbbiscuits Tue 07-Feb-12 19:34:02

Am really really sorry....have been waiting to complete on a house and have just found out we can rent it while the sale goes through. We need to pick up the keys at 6pm on Thursday!! Sorry will be busy working out where to put furniture before van arrives on Friday. Can you tell I'm excited?!

Would you like to do the following Thursday although this is half term if that matters. We are not going away as will be busy unpacking!

Theyda Tue 07-Feb-12 20:08:57

I'm happy to wait, life gets in the way but is more important to get your house sorted smile I would be excited too, would love to be moving.

E4EM Thu 09-Feb-12 18:43:19

Ooh, glad I had found time to check messages before heading out! Sorry, been offline for a couple of days.

No problem at all. Sounds very exciting! Where is the new place? Hope the move goes smoothly and you enjoy settling in.

I can't do next week, but how about the Thursday after?

katekitkat Wed 15-Feb-12 19:41:15

bbbiscuits Mon 20-Feb-12 23:13:44

Great see you all on Thursday upstairs with any book!

katekitkat Thu 23-Feb-12 18:25:41

Hi ladies,

I am really sorry but I'm not going to be able to make it tonight, I have tonsillitis (had to go to the walk-in centre as not even registered with a GP yet). I am really disappointed. I hope you have a lovely time and that I can join you next time. x

Theyda Tue 28-Feb-12 11:55:37

Hi all!
Hope you're feeling better Katekitkat, not a fun thing to have.

I started reading The Help and so far I'm really enjoying it, not too far in but already quite engrossed smile

katekitkat Wed 29-Feb-12 11:51:07

Hi all,

Much better now thank you. Did you have a nice evening? any plans to meet up again? I have already read The Help and I thought it was amazing.

E4EM Sun 04-Mar-12 20:55:08

Hi all,

I've just finished reading the book and loved it! Brilliant book. Looking forward to getting together to chat about it. We didn't make any plans to meet up Katekitkat, but said we would read The Help then meet up again.

Glad to hear you're feeling better.

Theyda Sun 11-Mar-12 17:19:24

Think I'm going to have to give book club a miss, i've hardly started reading it and my degree is taking over. I'm going to get to the end of the book though, who knows how long that will take me at the moment though! smile

katekitkat Mon 19-Mar-12 21:47:56

Hi Theyda, lots of luck with your degree, sorry to have missed you the first time!

E4M and Bbiscuits, are you still up for another meeting? how are you finding The Help?

Elvis44 Tue 20-Mar-12 07:24:52

Hi everyone? Is it too late to join your book club? I've always fancied joining one and with three of my close friends leaving the Exeter area would be great to meet some new people!

jjemma1 Wed 16-May-12 13:23:47

Does the book club/few glass of wine evening still happen?

would like to come along

katekitkat Thu 17-May-12 13:02:27

Hi jjemma1, nothing further happened with the book club but if you see the exeter mums thread I have suggeste meeting up next Monday morning?

NMM Thu 31-May-12 00:05:18

Should we give this another shot? I've just finished The Help, coincidentally...or can anyone suggest another book?

Elvis44 Fri 01-Jun-12 11:00:57

Hi,
I'd be interested in coming along! Don't mind what the first book is, am happy to meet up and then decide on one?

jjemma1 Tue 05-Jun-12 21:17:51

I'm up for meeting up, let me know when & where

Elvis44 Mon 11-Jun-12 08:37:25

jjemma1 and NMM - shall we start this off? When is good for you and any preferred locations? Can't do Tuesday or Friday evenings but otherwise fairly flexible.... Are we thinking of say meeting for an hour after kids are in bed? Or would something else work better for you?

NMM Mon 11-Jun-12 10:53:21

Let's do it! How about a Monday (DH works away Tue- Thur). Is central Exeter easiest for everyone?

jjemma1 Mon 11-Jun-12 19:56:57

Im game
Monday after 7pm in central Exeter is fine with me xx

Elvis44 Wed 13-Jun-12 10:18:54

Ooh I can do after 7 on a Monday in central Exeter too! smile How about Monday 25th? But where? Any suggestions?

NMM Wed 13-Jun-12 23:59:25

Jemma & I met at the NCT group yesterday and we came up with Mon 25th too! How about Wetherspoons on South St? 7.30-8ish?

Elvis44 Thu 14-Jun-12 08:32:17

Sounds great! Will aim to be there around 745. How will I recognise both of you? wink

NMM Tue 19-Jun-12 13:33:34

Elvis - sorry for late reply. We are away with grandparents this week.
Shall I bring a book along and leave it on the table we're at?

jjemma1 Tue 19-Jun-12 13:35:03

Its a date Monday 25th 7.30 ish - love it
What book shall we bring to look pretty on the table next to the glass of wine?

Elvis44 Wed 20-Jun-12 21:25:29

If u put a book on your table (as eye-catching as possible), I'll also come in carrying a book so you can both look out for me too! I'll just bring a current book so if I can't find you, I'll have something to read while I drink alone!!
Really looking forward to it and meeting you both! Will be the first time I'll have ever introduced myself as Elvis....?! wink

NMM Wed 20-Jun-12 23:24:18

Really looking forward to it too. Don't judge me by my book! - it'll probably be some airport trashy read that I grab on the way out the door <makes mental note to dust off 'War and Peace' over the weekend>...

Cactus76 Thu 21-Jun-12 10:59:45

Hi All,

I briefly introduced myself over on the Exeter mums thread. NMM has kindly suggested that I pop along on Monday too which would be lovely. I just need to sort out some baby feeding logistics.... Hopefully see you all there. I too will carry a book with me (something deeply intellectual, of course) smile

jjemma1 Thu 28-Jun-12 14:19:54

Had a lovely time on monday, both boys were sound asleep on when i got home !! What do you thinkabout making it a regular meeting? once a month the last monday of the month?

NMM Thu 28-Jun-12 19:41:13

Count me in! Shall we actually try to talk about books next time (equally happy to rename it Wine Club though!) grin

emma31070312 Fri 06-Jul-12 10:10:46

NMM Wed 11-Jul-12 08:45:22

We're away that week, but don't let that stop you!

Ksteve0 Wed 01-Aug-12 21:02:23

Hi, I have just moved to Exeter from Richmond with my husband and 14 month old son Elliott..... I have been in a book club for years and am excited about the prospect of joining a new one if you are taking new members?? I see I have just missed a meet up but that will give me time to get on with the next book! KELLY

NMM Fri 03-Aug-12 23:53:13

Jemma did the July meet-up go ahead?

Should we try for first Mon in Sept? Will most people be around then?

Ksteve0 absolutely! Come along - although I should probably warn you that our inaugural meeting was very productive on the wine drinking and chatting front, but not so on the book front!

jjemma1 Sun 05-Aug-12 19:52:23

No :-( .... no one said it was good/bad for them, so I guesses that people didnt wanna meet up. I dont know if anyone did turn up?

Is that the 3rd sept, should be fine with me x

Ksteve0 Mon 06-Aug-12 08:36:22

Thanks NMM, I am available 3rd Sep, has a book been agreed or do you just meet up and drink wine!!

jjemma1 Tue 21-Aug-12 22:21:19

How about we meet and talk about what book to read next over a glass or two of wine .... dont wanna rush the wine drinking

Exetermum Fri 31-Aug-12 00:30:14

Hi ladies,

Ksteve0 Mon 03-Sep-12 20:28:14

Hi, I'm in the pub, is anyone coming?

Ksteve0 Mon 03-Sep-12 21:14:08
