Glasgow West End - Hairdresser Recommendation

Being new to Glasgow, and to the West End, I am in dire need of a new haircut and great hairdresser. Looking for something fresh - and a cut thats easy but stylish. Any suggestions please as I have had WAY too many bad haircuts in my day and really need to get my mojo back!

QueenoftheVerse Tue 13-Mar-12 23:22:05

Hi there! Welcome to Glasgow!!! I actually live in Bearsden now (just outside Glasgow) but I have lived in Glasgow's West End most of my life, so I know it really well.

You're going to love it here, especially in the West End, it's fantastic.

I go to a place called Byres and Birrell. It's actually on Broomhill Cross but it's waaay better than most of the places in the west end or town. I use Cheryl, she's really fanatstic, highly recommended! IIRC it's about £50 for a cut and blow dry (so town or west end prices) but well worth it.

The thing I love about Cheryl at Byres and Birrell is that she really talks to you about what kind of style you want and I mean, talks it through with you and gives you examples in magazines, other hairdressers or customers.

Hope you love Glasgow as much as the rest of us!

Hey - thank you!

Got impatient and got my hair done at a salon in the West End - can I / should I mention the name - and its been DISASTROUS resulting in bright yellow hair. And it WASNT cheap. There was no colour consultation, no inspiration on cuts or styles that would suit. Truly rubbish. Not happy. Grrrrrrrrrr

Debating whether to go back and force them to re-colour (I made it clear I wasnt happy) or whether I need to cut my losses (and not risk them again) and go elsewhere?

My husband (from Glasgow) came in, saw the mess, and then suggested I should have gone to the Rainbow Rooms? A. Nice timing mister, thanks. B. Anyone know anything about Rainbow Rooms?

Geordieminx Fri 16-Mar-12 22:56:47

I use rainbow rooms in George square or Uddingston. Always been good. Think Carling is one of the best stylists at George Square Salon

Please name and shame because I'm looking for west end hairdresser too (work there). Rainbow room is hit and miss, I find. I've had some bad colours ( as in invisible) there, but good cuts.

lizziebennet Mon 19-Mar-12 14:06:20

I use the Rainbow Rooms in Royal Exchange Square. I think so much of it is down to the individual hairdresser though. I once went to the Rainbow Rooms on Buchanan St and absolutely hated what they did and the whole approach of the guy I had. I've only just finished growing it out 3 haircuts later.

prettybird Fri 23-Mar-12 12:27:33

I use Cresswell & Co in Cresswell Lane (Greg) - hope that wasn't where you went! I often get both my haircut and the colour complimented.

The only things is that they only take cash - but the cut'n'colour (foils of blond and red plus overall colour) that I had done at Christmas only cost me £90 (or was it £100?).

WentworthMillerMad Thu 05-Apr-12 18:43:26

You must use Omar who owns angel hair on queen Margaret drive. Cut and blow £20-£25, cut and colour £50-60. He is the best in west end and has a HuGE loyal clientele!
0141 946 8751 - you won't regret!

lancaster Fri 20-Apr-12 22:31:00

Hi, I'm another byres and birrell fan - I go to Nadia. They are also the only people I trust with my children's hair.

QueenoftheVerse Sat 21-Apr-12 00:25:03

The Rainbow Rooms (and I've tried all of the shops in Glasgow) are good, but honestly - Byres and Birrell are great. They really listen to what you want and if you're not happy, they'll try again! Cannot recommend them enough. They cut my Ds hair too, as lancaster said, they're great and one of the few people I'd trust.

I heartily recommend the rainbow rooms on great western rd - Caroline is brilliant. Fabulous cut for less than £40.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo Sun 22-Apr-12 20:45:17

hahahahaha do you know what i posted that got deleted? i made a guess at the salon that made an arse of the OP's hair. hahah. Initials EC. i so bet it was.

cartblanche Mon 23-Apr-12 00:16:53

I wondered what it was that you said grin HOW quick off the mark was someone (EC?) to have spotted that and got it deleted? I can't imagine Mumsnet are patrolling all the local boards to find posts that are dissing all the local hairdressers, waxers, dentist, florists etc... Funny.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo Mon 23-Apr-12 00:21:44

they must have a google alert set up. TOTALLY not surprised that they would be all over that, in retrospect. such a shame they don't care more about what their former clients think.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo Mon 23-Apr-12 00:23:08

btw re byres and birrell, £50 for a cut and blow dry is nowhere near town or west end prices...

giggly Mon 23-Apr-12 12:42:06

I went to EC on a groupon voucher and while the cut was good, I was soooo bored by their " have you got this product" that I'll never go again. The 3, yes 3 people that took care of meconfused advised on their bloody products.
The staff reminded me of a colony of ants.

Molendinar Mon 23-Apr-12 14:06:24

Hi guys, I was wondering, if you had 5 mins, maybe you could put some of these recommendations into the Glasgow Local Listings. It's looking a bit barren :-)

AitchTwoOhOneTwo Mon 23-Apr-12 15:02:27

i've been silenced, unfortunately...

TOTALLY agree. one member of staff to cut your hair, fifteen to tell you to buy the shampoo. bollocks to that.

giggly Mon 23-Apr-12 22:25:31

oh I had two to wash my hair, was I really lucky or just skanky?

AitchTwoOhOneTwo Tue 24-Apr-12 10:05:37

last time i was there, the adolescent washing my hair was chewing gum while keeping up the incessant sales patter. i was terrified it was going to fall out and land on my head.

Has anyone got any experience of Richardson Murray?

JulieBrown Thu 12-Jul-12 23:14:49

Suzanne from Stuart Donald, off Byres road on Highburgh (next to Tinderbox) is awesome!!!!

HoleyGhost Fri 13-Jul-12 14:58:04

I had a bad experience with Byres and Birrell

Rainbow rooms are good

Angelabdc Thu 19-Jul-12 19:22:28

I'd recommend Hair by Hanlon, very friendly salon and great service. I pay about £70 for a colour, cut and blow dry every couple of months and the only thing I've ever had forced upon me is cups of tea.

scottishmummy Sun 30-Sep-12 20:26:21

Dylan at rainbow room George square great
not cheap but fab staff,
good consultations,know their stuff

I am extremely disappointed by the customer service I received at LimeBlew, Ruthven Lane. I wanted blonde highlights and ended up with a ginger mess which had to be dyed a second time to attempt to rectify the mistake. Not only was the colour wrong but the dye job was terrible and my hair is now patchy. I was in the salon for over 6 hours and my hair was not even cut. The service was very poor, with excuses being made about the colour in my hair and the patches that had been dyed in. In the end my money had to be refunded as they did not attempt to fix my hair and overall the experience was dreadful, I cannot express my disappointment enough.

mazzamcw Mon 18-Mar-13 19:24:22

I had a haircut from a great stylist called Dougie at Cruz Hair & Beauty at the end of 2012. Unfortunately I called today to make another appointment and he no longer works there :-( ...and they wouldn't tell me which salon he went to. Anyone any ideas??

awaynboilyurheid Sat 23-Mar-13 18:16:17

Another vote for Byres and Burrell, both my daughters go and their hair is their pride and glory, another vote for cheryl, but they are all meant to be good.

bramble55 Sat 13-Apr-13 21:29:16

I need a REALLY GOOD HAIRCUT!! Can anyone recommend a good hair salon in the West End, where they have an older clientele. I have an allergy to hair dye, I'm in my fifties, and I need a sympathetic hairdresser hmm

prettybird Tue 16-Apr-13 12:19:01

Brambles - I go to Cresswell & Co (on Cresswell Lane) and get Greg to do my hair. It's very reasonable (my cut last week, on my 52nd birthday, was £45 - a colour is usually about £90).

Greg is good at listening to what you want - at the moment I'm growing my hair but when I decide to cut it, he'll do it in a way that suits me (I've had it both long and short since I started going to him - I used to go to Taylor Ferguson's and get Taylor to do it, but stopped when it got too expensive tried to forget about the £200+ cut 'n' colour blush). The other main guy (Gavin?) also seems to be good at listening and I've seen nice haircuts that he's done.

Tel 334 5031. One word of warning though - they don't take credit cards (except for beauty treatments?), so you need cash.

Lynxland Fri 03-May-13 16:55:24

I live in the west end and have a fab hairdresser who comes to the house. This is fab as have very young children. PM me if you want details!

JennyPiccolo Sun 30-Jun-13 10:02:58

I went to the rainbow rooms years ago and they put bleach on my scalp. It was incredibly painful, I'm surprised my hair didn't fall out. That was about ten years ago though.

Yummymummy0284 Mon 01-Jul-13 21:42:11

Went to cresswell & co in the west of glasgow as I needed a new look got great colour from jackie and great cut from Caroline , great atmosphere will defo use a again got great comments from friends

dianne07 Tue 02-Jul-13 17:47:49

I stay in the wet end also and i have been going to the same hairdressers for years. Its called Cresswell & co...situated in Cresswell lane...just off byres road! amazing service, friendly staff and i always leave happy. I would highly reccomend.

gmckenzie Mon 29-Jul-13 20:06:18

Hi there mums! I have been reading some reviews and wanted to add my own little bit into it!

I have been going to Derek & Nicola (the owners of Byres & Birrell) for the last 20 years and followed them from previous salons until they had Byres & Birrell. I have always been happy with every cut, colour, product and any other things I have spent my money on throughout the years. This however is no longer, I wont be returning to Byres & Birrell. The young boy who works in the salon is the reason I will not be returning. I would HIGHLY recommend that if you choose this salon that you ask that he does not shampoo your hair or even bring you tea or coffee. His language is absolutely vulgar and outright disgusting. When I go to have my hair done I like to relax, do not get me wrong if the young person shampooing my hair wants to ask me what I am doing with my day or how my holidays been I am more than happy to chat away as all the young girls are so pleasant, I do not however want to over hear a young boy telling a lady at the basins of his weekend 'antics' shall we say, and how many girls he has got on the day etc etc... I have 4 daughters and find this VERY disrespectful. This incident happened a few months ago but I did go back since and have still continued to overhear horrible language and therefore will not be returning.
Has anyone else witnessed or over heard any of this?

Lindaarbuthnot Sun 01-Sep-13 10:27:53

Please ladies do not go to Tina Reilly salon in partick, I asked for chocolate brown base with caramel/beige highlights and I have the most disgusting shade of rusty red .after complaining they put more highlights in but looks awful . I'm calling Taylor ferguson tomorrow it will cost an arm and a leg but need to get this fixed , thank goodness I'm off work till Thursday !!!!!

mummyusuallyknowsbest Tue 01-Oct-13 13:46:13

sculptur have a salon at david lloyd in the west end (free parking) and at woodlands road, and are soon to open on Byres rd too. It's rare for me to stick to one salon as I tend to chop and change, but I've used the David Lloyd salon since it opened and have had various stylists. I've always been happy with the end result and their prices are really good too.

dianne07 Tue 22-Oct-13 10:25:27

Hi I go to Cresswells .co to get my colour done with Jackie and I also take my little boy in for dean to cut his hair on a Tuesday it's such a friendly salon I would recommend it to everyone

SnugglyBabies Tue 22-Oct-13 17:10:09

Urban West on Great Western Road next to Kelvinbridge underground station. Staff are extremely professional and put you at ease. They have a student discount also.

dianne07 Mon 11-Nov-13 11:57:54

Was at cresswell and co on Saturday for a return visit! Went to see Claire for a complete makeover loved my cut and colour. Also she suggested that I had my hair put for a ball that day which I also loved. They were also doing a deal on there gel nails that day so had them also. Amazing buzz in the salon with friendly efficient staff. Tea and homemade shortbread was an added bonus! And yes they do accept credit cards!!!!

prettybird Mon 11-Nov-13 13:08:09

That's new - they didn't accept credit cards when I was there at the beginning of October. They DO accept credit cards for "beauty" things though - maybe the fact that you had two things you were paying for made a difference?

herdawness Sat 23-Nov-13 21:19:38

Agree with Urban West on Great Western Road, great prices and friendly staff.. Have been going to Sarah for years now and never disappointed.

MumMum27 Tue 07-Jan-14 21:55:56

I recommend a visit to Cresswell&Co in Cresswell Lane. I've been going there for a while now, the staff is so friendly and down to earth. I always leave feeling satisfied with the service I received. I get my hair cut from Caroline which she always gives me a choice in what I would like and always makes sure I have an up to date style, I also get my hair coloured by Jackie she always gives me a fresh and unique colour. I would highly recommend Caroline and Jackie as I always feel fabulous when I leave.

Partickular Sat 01-Feb-14 10:34:16

My experience of Tina Reilly is that it's fantastic, reasonably priced, friendly staff, nice neighbourhood feel and most importantly good cuts and have never been unhappy with the colour.

Happychick1234 Wed 16-Apr-14 16:52:24

Just wanted to thank the girls who recommended Cheryl at Byers & Birrell. Was searching for somewhere new and came across this thread. Just back and love my hair cut. Cheryl is lovely, great advice, nice salon and very efficient service. smile

Evelyn14 Wed 30-Jul-14 09:24:42

I used this discussion thread to find a hairdresser in Glasgow. I moved back here almost a year ago and after two disastrous cuts, went back to my old hairdresser (a long journey!). I found this discussion very useful and tried Cresswell's yesterday. Am delighted with the cut, have already had many compliments and will definitely be a repeat customer. Thanks very much for the recommendation!

Don't ever go to Cresswell and Co. on Cresswell Lane. My hair has been ruined with a cut that hasn't been cut straight, the layers blended properly or evened out so it's at the same length from one side of my head to the other.

I asked for a trim and was given - without asking me - a badly executed disconnected hair cut which has made my hair look wonky. Someone actually asked if a student had cut it!

3 other professional stylists, who I sought advice from said it was dreadful and the only way to fix , other than taking it short, is to let it grow out. The ombre highlights that were supposedly being added haven't developed evenly across my hair and it's all in a step 2 inches away from my root. It looks awful!

When I complained the manager Greg was rude and aggressive. He made me feel intimidated and was unbelievably rude. He said "Your hair was awful to begin with you looked much better when you left here". He then later said I was obviously a very confident girl who was successful in my job (what the hell has that to do with anything?!) but he was also a very successful businessman who wouldn't let me intimidate him. I've never been so patronised. The big businessman scaring the wee confident girl!

I don't want anyone else to have their hair ruined and then belittled with such disgusting rudeness.

Just had a fabulous haircut and colour in Glasgow West End.
Creswell & Co came highly recommended & I thought I'd treat myself .the staff were friendly and the stylist Greg was charming, he advised me on the right colour and I have the best cut ever.
The salon is beautiful & the great value for money.
Well worth a visit

bobabo Tue 16-Sep-14 09:13:20

Laura I hope you find a way to style your hair while that grows out. That's awful treatment to receive. I hope you didn't pay.

prettybird Tue 16-Sep-14 15:49:55

I'm sorry you had a bad experience at Cresswell &Co sad

I've always been extremely happy with the cut (and colours) that I get done there (by Greg - although he doesn't do the colour himself) and have had loads of compliments (both when I had long hair and more recently when I had it cut shorter) about the cuts and the colour.

megmcguire Wed 17-Sep-14 23:51:40

I can't believe the experience you've had with Cresswells! I have been a client for a number of years and they've always treated me with the upmost respect. I've always had FANTASTIC haircuts here from all the girls - so much so that i'd never go anywhere else now! My hair is my pride and joy and they make me feel like a million dollars when i'm there! And as for you calling Greg "intimidating" I am shocked! He's a truly wonderful hairdresser of whom i've never heard a bad word said! I truly hope this one bad experience you've had with this salon doesn't affect others opinions.

GlasgowGurl Tue 07-Oct-14 21:25:32

Hello all:
Was combing (no pun intended) through this thread as I need a good career haircut. I have rather long hair; and I love it long; but I need to crop it as I want to go back into my old field of financial work. sad

I do not want a "mom bob". I would also like some low lights as I am too light after summer; my hair is actually tray but I have it "water coloured" blonde.

So, if anyone has anything else to add; I am in the West End.

GlasgowGurl Tue 07-Oct-14 21:28:35

Wow. I had jotted down this salon from the threads; and this makes me cross it off. Thank you!

Hey Ladies! I would like to recommend all you 'westenders' to go see Jo at Westend Hair. She is just great! I've been going to see her for the past year or so and have recommended all my friends to go too. My friends and I are all really happy with our hair. She is a lovely girl with a hilarious sense of humour and is very gentle (which isn't common). It seems she is dab hand at everything, as she does my hair (long, with very blonde highlights), my 8 year old sons and my husband (who she seems to have made even more handsome). I used to hate the hairdressers and really struggled to find someone who didn't just treat me like I was wasting their time. So yeah when you find something good I think it is good to share smile

janeBoyle Thu 04-Dec-14 11:03:04

I’ve been to a few of the hairdressers mentioned on this thread and I have to agree with some of the comments about awful customer service at some the so called ‘trendy’ salons angry(I don’t want to say which ones!)
But I must say that my favourite hairdresser in the West End is Maggie at Gosh! It’s quite a new salon but I think it used to be called Urban West (?). I’ve used Maggie from when she worked at Toni & Guy. She is a miracle worker for me and my family. I really like the salon too. It’s easy to get to (next to kelvinbridge subway) and the staff are super friendly and always on hand with a complimentary glass of vino if required (when is it not grin wink)

LuckyLady9 Sun 07-Dec-14 20:14:59

Hi i'm looking to have my hair cut and i've narrowed it down to my 3 closest salons mentioned on this thread. Which is v helpful i must add. Fingers crossed as i've had a few bad experiences in the past with hairdressers hacking my hair!! I will you all know how i get on. Also in desperately of a good beauty therapist does anyone have any recommendations?
