Hi All.

I am new to Winchester and looking to make some friends.

DC 3.9 and I have been to several groups/activities in the area since moving but haven't yet found any friends (or people who want to talk to us sad )

Would be lovely to meet some others in the Winchester area.

new2winchester Mon 25-Jul-11 22:25:49

I am moving to Winchester at the start of October and would love to meet some other people, especially other mums with babies/toddlers. My little boy is just turning one. Also any suggestions of any groups on Thursdays or Fridays or weekends gratefully received!

winkygirl Mon 01-Aug-11 12:05:23

MogandMe sorry to hear that you haven't met any friendly Winchester Mums. It can be a bit clichey at times but do persevere.

I have DD 5 and DS 3.5 and work part time so I do not do much in the way of groups/activities now. On Fridays I have been taking DS to Music with Mummy, Josie Dade in Stanmore. We LOVED the classes which are designed for 1 - 3 year olds. DS is starting 3/4 time with Josie in September which is music/drama and the next stage on from Music with Mummy.

A couple of years ago I found Christchurch Toddlers on Tuesdays and Fridays good. It is the big church on Christchurch Road near the uni/hospital. They have free-play then stories and songs. The organisers are very friendly.

MogandMe is your DC at preschool? Mine is starting in September and our preschool is asking for committee members so maybe yours would be too? I wish I had more time to do stuff like that but am promising myself I will join the PTA at primary school.

Final suggestion would be NCT. I was a member and there is plenty of stuff going on.

CurwySwide Mon 01-Aug-11 19:45:36

Hi MogandMe and newtowinchester - what part of Winchester are you in/moving to? Different parts of the city have different local baby/toddler groups and if you want to meet other parents whose children will go to the same preschool/primary as yours, then it may be useful to go to the ones most local to you - I can suggest some if that would help?

There are a number of nice playgrounds, such as the one next to the River Park leisure centre, the one in Abbey Gardens near to the Guildhall and one at Oram's Arbour near to Fulflood, where it can be that bit easier to get into a conversation with other parents - I know from experience how intimidating toddler groups can be when you know nobody but everybody else knows each other!

Also the leisure centre has a few good drop-in baby/toddler groups - Creepy Crawlies runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and have lots of play equipment and either a bouncy castle or large trampoline - again this can be an easier way to engage with other parents than the traditional baby/toddler group setting.

Hope this helps - let me know if you'd like any more info. I live in Winchester and have a little boy who will be three in September so know a bit about the local facilities!

Hi all,

We moved to the area 2 months ago. My DD is 3.4 and looking for buddies (me too, though i do work 3 days a week). I was recommended the drop in sessions at Lanterns before the school hols, but didn't manage to make it there. We may try them again next term. Would be more than happy to meet up sometime if you are interested?

new2winchester Thu 08-Sep-11 21:11:53

Thanks to all for the tips - we are moving to just south of St Cross, near the park and ride! I'd love to meet up with some local mums once we get settled - I'll have Thursdays and Fridays free. I will need to get my bearings as to where things like the leisure centre are, I've only ever visited Winchester for a few hours.
Will post again once we have moved.....

Woo hoo!

linky to another thread..

CurwySwide Fri 09-Sep-11 23:20:05

Hurrah - a local thread - hope to see other Winchester people here soon!

MogandMe Sat 10-Sep-11 20:28:40

We're in Harestock - have met some people since I started this thread which is good!!! grin

Maybe we should arrange a group meet maybe soft play at riverside one afternoon.

Amber77 Tue 13-Sep-11 20:42:05

Im new to communicating like this so am not sure if its right to 'butt in' this thread!
Im also new to Winchester & would love to meet up with other mums. MogandMe suggested a group meeting, has this happened? I'd love to come along too : )

MogandMe Tue 13-Sep-11 21:05:51

Hi Amber

We haven't sorted out a date yet - where are you?

Amber77 Tue 13-Sep-11 21:31:07

Im in Hyde, Winchester nr River Park Leisure Centre. Are you nearby? Im happy to use buses to get around.

MogandMe Tue 13-Sep-11 21:38:05

I live in Harestock and have a 3.11 year old boy. We tend to get into the city most days smile thanks to being on the number 1 bus route! grin

Hi Amber. I'm in Twyford but we go to the park by River Park quite a lot. I have one toddler boy, 22mo

Anyone have date/location preferences?

CurwySwide Wed 14-Sep-11 08:58:36

Hi all - sorry for not responding sooner - things are rather hectic as we are moving house this weekend!

I am in Fulflood so am pretty central. My son has just turned three.

River Park may be a good central point?

prolificwillybreeder Wed 14-Sep-11 09:05:42

Hello, I live near Winchester and have a 14 month old and a newborn. Would love to meet up if there is a group meet up?
Feeling pretty isolated here at the moment.
NCT is a good idea, I'll look at their website.

prolificwillybreeder Wed 14-Sep-11 09:07:00

I'm also on a bus route though as we live in dinky village they run once a blooming hour!

CurwySwide Wed 14-Sep-11 12:48:42

prolificwillybreeder - do i take it from your username that you have two little boys? grin

prolificwillybreeder Wed 14-Sep-11 12:50:51

Why yes! What gave that away? grin

grin at prolific's name! I'm waiting to find out if I'm a willy-breeder too (20wks with DC2)

When's a good time for people then? We often go to the River park play area on weekday afternoons, about 3ish

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers Wed 14-Sep-11 13:05:28

Hi welcome to Winchester. I have been here 3 years now and my dc are a bit older (6 & 11). My neighbour Liz runs a toddler group at Badger Farm Community Centre (next to Sainsburys) on Thursday afternoons.

prolificwillybreeder Wed 14-Sep-11 13:21:06

Weekdays are good, 3ish may be a little late for us, ds1 has his tea at 4 and his stomach is like a clock!
We've lived in or around Winch for years but since having the boys I've just felt quite lonely tbh.

prolificwillybreeder Wed 14-Sep-11 13:21:52

Eek! Good luck at your scan mistressploppy! You must let us know smile

MogandMe Wed 14-Sep-11 13:40:15

I can do any afternoon but Thursday if before 4pm. Otherwise anytime's good for us - maybe river park soft play or the discovery centre for cake grin

CurwySwide Wed 14-Sep-11 14:27:58

Afternoons are good for us too, except Thursdays. Any time really after 2pm, as long as we are home by about 5pm otherwise DS gets very hungry and amazingly grumpy indeed!

MogandMe Wed 14-Sep-11 17:50:15

I'm away for the next 2 weeks so shall we say the 1st week of October?

prolificwillybreeder Wed 14-Sep-11 18:02:54

1st Oct sounds good. You said cake, I'm sure cake was mentioned!

prolificwillybreeder Wed 14-Sep-11 18:03:27

Sorry first week of Oct. I got carried away once cake was mentioned!

prolificwillybreeder Wed 14-Sep-11 18:05:06

I'll give DS1 a big lunch so as long as home for 5 should be fine.
He'll probably will want some cake, the cheeky thing!

I'm away 'til 2nd Oct so count me in for first week of Oct sometime!

Scan went well, especially when she ORDERED me to go and get a coffee and a chocolate bar to get the baby to move to a better position! I think I might have spotted a willy but can't be sure....grin

prolificwillybreeder Thu 15-Sep-11 12:33:54

Eek! Exciting! Oh no I'm already starting to get a tiny bit of bump envy.
I was ordered to do the same thing with ds1.

So which day would be good? Would a Wednesday be good?

Wednesday is good for me - that's the 5th, right? Maybe, 2.30ish?

Amber77 Thu 15-Sep-11 14:30:59

Cant make the 5th Oct - shame. If you do decide to meet again then please let me know. BTW, does anybody know how to send personal messages here? I have an 'inbox' but dont know how it works. It would be good if we could exchange numbers & keep in touch smile

CurwySwide Thu 15-Sep-11 17:33:34

Perhaps we could do Tuesday 4 Oct (same time, same place) so Amber can make it too?

I can do Tuesday too <no life grin>

Amber, just look to the left of any poster's name - it says Message Poster. Click that and scribble away!

RIGHT! The RIGHT of any poster's name!

prolificwillybreeder Thu 15-Sep-11 20:15:32

Tuesday is great smile
I just did Aqua Zumba... 8 weeks post natal. I am mad! Seeing women in their 60's doing it though was great.

CurwySwide Thu 15-Sep-11 20:44:24

Tuesday it is then by the sound of it? How will we recognise each other? Should we carry a newspaper tucked up under one arm or similar? grin

prolificwillybreeder Thu 15-Sep-11 20:53:32

Haha I can tuck a paper under my arm. Do we need a hand code?
I'll be easy to recognise: the exhausted, awkward looking one pushing a P&T.

MogandMe Thu 15-Sep-11 21:04:15

Tuesday sounds good smile

I'll be the very tall chunky one in the Ebay scarf blush

So we have:

Any other takers? grin

If we get a list sorted then we can pm mobile numbers around if we want to

prolificwillybreeder Fri 16-Sep-11 14:47:45

You know I'm sure I saw someone in Sainsburys BadgerFarn with the eBay scarf the other day and did think ' ooh a mumsnetter?' couldn't see too well though as DS2 promptly covered me in milk sick- nice!

Amber77 Fri 16-Sep-11 22:41:18

Hey all, just logged on & seen the meeting is now 4th Oct - I'll be there too!! Love the newspaper idea : )

missingwine Sun 18-Sep-11 08:13:04

Yay; just found this thread in time for cake! I'd like to meet up too, as I'm currently living in Chandler's Ford with DH & DS who's 3, but moving to Winchester in the next couple of months. If we're meeting on a Tuesday, I'll be able to eat all of my cake without having to share as James is at nursery all day grin

prolificwillybreeder Sun 18-Sep-11 08:48:09

Missingwine I'm in CF too! But moving next month.
I'll have to share my cake <sigh!> No one warned me about having to share cake when I became a mother!

MogandMe Sun 18-Sep-11 15:43:29

I am a mean nanny - I don't share cake grin

Good to know there's another 3 year old boy out there missingwine we're desperatley seeking 3 year old boys to play with smile

Sariska Mon 19-Sep-11 14:46:20

Just found this thread (was on the original one on the Property board). Would also like to meet up but sadly cannot do a Tuesday pm (unless it was before 3pm) so please someone PM me if there's another meet up. Usually I think I could do any time except Tuesday pm! <Typical emoticon>

I am another one with a 3 yo boy (3.6 to be accurate). And an 18 mo DD.

Oh, and I have the eBay scarf (in brown). Love it!

prolificwillybreeder Mon 19-Sep-11 19:58:31

I need an eBay scarf! Can someone wear theirs at the meet up please!
Sariska- I'll pm you for the next one smile

MogandMe Tue 27-Sep-11 18:25:52

So this time next week we'll all be talking about the weird MNetters we'd spent the afternoon with grin

Amber77 Thu 29-Sep-11 11:04:42

Hello all,

Just to recap, is the meeting Tue 4th Oct at 2pm?? Would someone confirm where it is? Will there be an eBay scarf in sight? Im looking forward to meeting friendly mums in the area : )

MogandMe Thu 29-Sep-11 22:35:16

Hi Amber

Yes to Tuesday at 2pm but not sure whether we were having cake at the discovery centre or heading to riverpark soft play?

I won't be wearing a scraf but sure another Mnetter will grin

prolificwillybreeder Fri 30-Sep-11 12:06:41

Hi all. I'm gutted but I can't make next week sad as have managed to get DS1 an appointment with an excema specialist. Hopefully she might be able to help us!
Would still love to meet up so let me know if you will be meeting again.

Hi everyone! Me and DS1 will be at the River park park, might be a tad late but I will try to remember to wear my ebay scarf! I also have a bright pink Boden mac so you really can't miss me blush

Shall we meet there and head to the Discovery Centre for cake if it's rainy/cold?

MogandMe Sun 02-Oct-11 17:52:03

Sounds like a plan.

We will go for a bright orange colour so if you see a nanny in orange chasing or shouting at a small boy in orange - that's us grin

missingwine Mon 03-Oct-11 17:20:27

So tomorrow at 2pm ladies, but where's the River Park soft play? I'm not that familiar with the area yet. I'll be wearing a blue patterned mac if it's raining. Otherwise, probably a stripy maxidress and looking out for people in bright pink & orange!
Hopefully we'll all manage to be in the same place at a similar time smile

I thought we were meeting in the outside park? It's sort of round the back of the sports centre; as you drive into the car park, it's the very first turning on the right, but you can't drive down there - just park and walk round.

Or if walking from town, head down Middle Brook Street, cross over North Walls, past the uni and you'll see the river; park is on the left.

CurwySwide Mon 03-Oct-11 19:37:11

I will see you all there tomorrow afternoon - I'll have a large green Orla Kiely bag (oh and a three year old boy who will no doubt be trying to run in the opposite direction to wherever I am trying to go!).

MogandMe Mon 03-Oct-11 21:58:09

See you tomorrow at 2.

missingwine Mon 03-Oct-11 23:08:54

Lovely - I know where it is now, so looking forward to meeting everyone at the park tomorrow

Hi everyone!

Missing, Curwy, Amber - so lovely to meet you! Mog - we missed you sad. Are you ok?

We are going to try another meet up so there is another chance to join in the fun! Mon 10th, same time, same place.

And we need a secret sign to check for Mumsnetters, so here are some suggestions;

repeatedly scanning the sky for birds of prey
demonstrating ballet moves
waving a tissue around to emphasise a point
standing on one leg
all of the above

missingwine Tue 04-Oct-11 19:45:52

Ha ha, Mistress Ploppy, we definitely need a secret sign! I'll give the sky scanning a go on Monday to see if anyone approaches me. If they look like psychiatric nurses, I'll pirouette out of the playground on one leg while waving a tissue smile
It was great to meet up with you, Curwy and Amber and hopefully some others will make it next week

CurwySwide Tue 04-Oct-11 20:11:19

Hi all - it was lovely meeting everyone today. My little boy was exhausted by the time we got home - all that leaf throwing in the park completely tired him out!

We are definitely up for meeting next Monday afternoon and hope those who weren't there today make it next week.

Yeah, mine was knackered too, Curwy. And had a nappy-full of leaves (not digested, thankfully grin)

CurwySwide Tue 04-Oct-11 20:59:08

Amber77 Thu 06-Oct-11 17:11:46

It was lovely to meet you all too. My vote goes to waving a tissue around for our secret sign, highly amusing!!

Have a great weekend & see you soon : )

HandM Fri 07-Oct-11 12:12:42

Hi all - we're also new to Winchester (1 month in) and still feeling a bit unsettled. Would love to join in your pirouetting, plane-spotting, tissue-waving shenanigans if we can. 16 month old daughter and I will hang around sheepishly on Monday!

CurwySwide Fri 07-Oct-11 13:07:37

Hi HandM - welcome to Winchester!

Just to help you to identify us (apart from the hankies/planespotting etc.), I will have my large green Orla Kiely bag with me - it is fairly distinctive - so hopefully you won't need to look too sheepish for too long!

see you then

Hi HandM! Loving the name!

I'll be there, hopefully, I'm the tall one in the hideous bright pink boden mac.

HandM Mon 10-Oct-11 11:21:58

Thank you for welcome! Unfortunately, M came down with fever over the weekend - running 39 to 40 still in waves, so wouldn't be fair to either her or your little ones if we came along today. Boo. Enjoy and hopefully we can make your next rendezvous.

Oh shame, HandM. I hope M gets well soon. Check back here for more meet-up, I'm sure there'll be more.

Sariska Mon 10-Oct-11 14:20:55

Hello! CS kindly PMd me and I was (am) hoping to come along today. Unfortunately DS is asleep right now and I don't want to wake him (he was I'll recently and still seems unusually tired). Don't know how long you're all planning to stay at River Park but I only live 5 mins away so will pop along as soon as I can on the off-chance.

Sariska Mon 10-Oct-11 14:22:06

ill not I'll. <IPad with mind of its own>

prolificwillybreeder Mon 10-Oct-11 17:54:16

Oh I'm gutted! I only just saw my inbox had a message in it!
Right, I'll be checking my inbox now if you do meet up again. I'd love to come!

Oh, sorry to miss you guys. We're going to meet again, Mon at 2pm at Riverpark playpark.

I'm usually about 30min late as DS naps at midday....

CurwySwide Mon 10-Oct-11 19:47:15

Hope to see people there next week - could become a regular Monday afternoon meet? (Though maybe decamping to soft play or similar on rainy days!).

Sariska Mon 10-Oct-11 20:55:08

Sorry to miss you all but hope to make it next week. DS only woke at 3, was miserable as sin and was then sick so no doubt you will all be glad we didn't show up!

Hope you all had fun.

prolificwillybreeder Tue 11-Oct-11 16:59:00

I'll see what I can do

prolificwillybreeder Tue 11-Oct-11 17:09:58

Sorry I have no idea where the rest of my post went!

I'll see what I can do, Monday's can be tricky for us but hopefully come Nov we should be sorted.

new2winchester Wed 19-Oct-11 21:58:03

Hello all,
I have now moved into the area, we are living just south of St Cross. Finding the area really beautiful but keen to meet some other mums and littles ones to settle in properly....I am around on Thursdays and Fridays if anyone would like to meet up in the park or for a coffee? Or perhaps if there is a good toddler group or activity session we could meet up with some of you there?

Hi everyone!

We've missed the last two Monday's as everyone's been snotty or busy or generally not around...but we'll get back to it soon!

Hi Liz, I'm around lots; I have 2yo DS. I'm around on Thurs and Fridays if you fancy meeting up - anyone else?

Also - another discussion re Winchester meet-ups here grin

new2winchester Tue 01-Nov-11 21:51:27

I've had a few weeks to get to know the area so at least now I know where the river park soft play and discovery centre are!!
I'm around this Thursday morning (3rd) or Friday afternoon (4th) if anyone else is? Could meet up at the Discovery centre for Rhyme Time and cake afterwards? I've heard its pretty busy tho?

CurwySwide Wed 02-Nov-11 18:16:58

Hi - I can't do this week sorry but should be around next Thurs/Fri so do let me know if you are meeting and we will see you then.

Also, I was thinking of taking my DS to soft play at River Park next Monday afternoon if anyone is up for that? Plenty of room to sit down and the cafe is just down the corridor for drinks and cakes. Hope to see people there.

CurwySwide Wed 02-Nov-11 18:20:08

I should have said we'll be there at 2ish and it is £1 for every half hour.

Sorry I did not mean to add this to this thread I meant to start a new one and I don't know how to delete it now it is on here.

azmj Fri 03-Aug-12 20:55:08

Hello, I know your post was almost a year ago now, but I am now in your position! We are moving to St Cross from Winchester. How did you find it? Did you meet some friendly people? It feels a little like jumping off a cliff at the moment. I have a 3 year old and 18month old. I'd love to hear about your experince!
