St christophers school and st francis letchworth(19 Posts)
Can any one tell me their take on these two schools please ?
Hi, I have posted on st Chris thread. St Francis is opposite end of spectrum. Stricter - good academic results because of their annual assessments to keep or get a place - if I understand correctly). Old fashioned - a friend whose child goes there says it facilities are not great.
Personally I would choose st Chris for primary for st Francis for secondary. Actually I'm going for the good state school - lordship primary!
The schools are so different I can't imagine anyone visiting and not having a strong gut reaction.
Best of luck x
We are looking at St Francis at the moment. I haven't been round St Chris as, much as i like the ethos, in reality don't think it would suit DD. I agree with MsGee's comments above re St F. I came out feeling like I had just revisited my school from the 1980s and felt a bit freaked out! Having said that though, I have heard losts of positives about it and have a feeling that DD1 would thrive there (and that it would be good at building her confidence, give her self discipline but also support her artistic/creative side - they offer performing arts scholarships at prep level which has to be a good sign).
Have you looked round either yet?
Hi, we went to see both schools and st francis academically better but facilities need updating. St Chris is new and modern but for our brood would not work long term - up to yr2.
Both offer a good education but diff culture and ethos. Depends on what works for your family.
What do you Peple think of letchworth?
Are you saying St Chris would only work up to yr2 because of the academic side of things?
Agree re facilities at St F though at least there are facilities eg swimming pool, theatre etc. But I did find some of the corridors very dark, and a bit of a maze though I imagne you get used to that.
What have you decided?
I don't live in letchworth so tbh don't know it that well. I think Hitchin has more 'soul' but maybe that i just because i know it better.
Hi Dosa, letchworth is a bit of a funny town. Lots of commuters and but still a town of locals. Sometimes the two populations seem on different planets...
We moved here for commuting reasons but it's grown on us. Lots of green spaces, nice place to being up kids. We did most of our socialising after work in London - and now with a small child there is less socialising...
I found that I had to make a real effort to make connections here but it was just a case of hunting out like minded folks.
Thanks for the update. Letchworth seems safe and sociable but bit not developed or upmarket as Hitchin. Royston smaller but same mix of people as letchworth. Looking for family set up so shld work.
I totally recommend St Francis. My daughter has been there since Year 7 and has grown in confidence from day one and is doing brilliantly academically. It is a bit old fashioned, but all the teachers know my daugther, her friends are lovely and I think it is a fantastic school. It brings out the best in every pupil and the teachers really care. A couple of friends have kids at St Chris, and they seem happy but I get the feeling it does not achieve so well on academic side? If your daughter wants to achieve academically and would be happy in a girls school, St Francis is a great choice.
Dosa have you looked in the manor park area near Willian? Close to both private schools and a bit posher than other areas Willian village is lovely too and practically part of letchworth.
Thanks alot for the recommendation Fairywoods :-)
Hi all, I will look at willan village. I have accepted places for my girls at st Francis and they are excited. I am moving from London so a little daunting. Hopeing mums are sociable at st francis and school is a little tired but more interested in teaching and care of girls!
Is there a school bus and at what age do the girls get on ?
Hi Dosa, I don't know about school buses but do know Willian and surrounding areas well, so feel free to pm me.
Am sure the mums are v friendly
How old are your girls? My DD1 is going in for taster day/assessment this tuesday (currently yr1)
Hi, new to posting ...I have dd going into yr2. Had taster day and shy girl enjoyed her day. V excited so hopefully will all work. Just need to find somewhere to live and cant decide between letchworth or Royston. Good luck.let me know what u think.
In theory then they might be starting in the same class in sept. I will pm after Tues if all goes well! Glad to hear your daughter enjoyed the taster day - I have to broach the subject with DD1 today as she has no idea we are considering moving her.
Are you planning on going to the open morning next saturday?
I don't know Royston at all as we are the other side of Hitchin - so unfortunately no school bus and bad traffic. Not even worked out the logistics of fitting that around work!
If your daughters are going to St F, then I would go for Letchworth, just because the traffic can be bad in the mornings. There won't be many properties for sale in Willian itself, so look for things promoted as the south side of Letchworth or Manor Park. If you have any queries on that area, feel free to ask. The tourist shop in the town centre has decent maps of Letchworth which I think includes Manor Park and Willian.
Offered a place :-) but no feedback at all. Did you get any ?
We had a call but asked for that because we were moving house and want to inform our current school. In terms of feedback, nothing specific but that the girls would fit in well. My girls seem to really enjoy their day so, we could see no probs.
I think they are more likely to say something if there is a prob. You should call them for a follow up chat and ask for feedback if you have questions.
Let me know if you decide to move forward good to meet.
