Hi, I moved to Redbourn last year and looking to join or start a book club. Could you please let me know of a local one or if anyone is interested in starting one?

HalleLouja Tue 27-Sep-11 09:02:22

There was a thread about one but seemed to die a death. Am in wheathampstead end would be keen to join one.

April81 Tue 27-Sep-11 12:32:46

Hi HalleLouja,

That's great. Let's hope we get a few more takers (fingers crossed!) :-)

milaj Tue 27-Sep-11 15:22:28

Hi! I am in St Albans and would like to join a book club too!

April81 Tue 27-Sep-11 23:14:21

Hi milaj,

Great! Let's see if we get a few more people over the next few days...

April81 Thu 29-Sep-11 15:53:48

Hi,

I found this site www.bookgourmets.co.uk/ which is looking for members around St.Albans to start their first book club here. I registered my interest so waiting to see what happens next. Worth checking it out!

stargazer1 Thu 29-Sep-11 19:54:13

Hi,
I'm in Wheathampstead and I'd potentially be interested.

HalleLouja Thu 29-Sep-11 20:38:06

Gaining some interest. It might be worth using a neutral venue if we have enough interest....

I'd be interested in a few months when my baby might please god be sleeping better

April81 Fri 30-Sep-11 14:02:35

Hi,

Looks like we've got a few more 'interests'..should we think about meeting up for a 'get to know' session and decide on a book?? I just don't want the thread to die...

milaj Fri 30-Sep-11 21:04:44

Hi,

I agree with April about meeting up. Any suggestions?

HalleLouja Mon 03-Oct-11 09:22:51

Shall we decide on a book and a location / time to meet? I think we should meet in the evenings but am not too hot at getting places on time with my 4 month old still needing me to feed her....

April81 Mon 03-Oct-11 13:38:01

Yes, evenings are better for me too. I'm fine with St.Albans/Harpenden or Redbourn as a location. It looks like it's going to be the three of us for now...Are we deciding on a book when we meet up? I've got a few sugesstions :-)

ivylady Mon 03-Oct-11 21:32:47

Hello all - I too would like to join a book group, I am based in Harpenden, and evenings are best for me too, once the little ones are settled down.

NKfe1272cX1158161fcc2 Tue 04-Oct-11 10:53:14

I'd love to join a book group too - evenings by far the best for me too! I'm in Redbourn so St Albans/Harpenden/Redbourn are great for me.

April81 Tue 04-Oct-11 12:29:26

What about a date within the next two weeks? I'm pretty much ok to meet any day between the 10th-24th (as of now!)

ivylady Tue 04-Oct-11 21:12:32

11th, 18th or 20th good for me - or 1st, 2nd, 3rd November after half term. Anyone got a suggestion of good venue: not really familiar with pubs around here. Pub seems the best option?

April81 Wed 05-Oct-11 12:49:10

Shall we say the 20th for now and see if it's convenient for all to make it? Looks like it's just the two of us as of now!

HalleLouja Wed 05-Oct-11 18:59:19

Do we need time to read the book first?

April81 Wed 05-Oct-11 23:12:50

I guess I misunderstood...I thought we were going to decide on a book when we meet up. If we are meeting after reading the book then I guess we'll have to decide on what to read first!! Shall we put our suggestions forward and pick the book which gets the most votes?

I suggest one of the following:

1). Sepulchre - By Kate Moss
The story is based in two time periods, 1891 and present day (2007), and follows two female protagonists.

2). Enduring Love - By Ian McEwan
Two strangers become perilously entangled after witnessing a deadly accident.

I've read quiet a lot of positive reviews about both books so thought of naming them as our (possible) first book to read. :-)

ivylady Thu 06-Oct-11 09:04:44

I have read Enduring Love many years ago but would also like to read Sepulchre, so happy with either choice.

Another suggestion: and a book I have just read is Room by Emma Donoghue:
www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/aug/01/room-emma-donoghue-review-fritzl
It's quite a short, easy read but I think could cause a lot of discussion!

HalleLouja Thu 06-Oct-11 09:59:54

Not a fan of Enduring Love but not fussy apart from.that.

April81 Thu 06-Oct-11 12:19:46

I vote for 'Room' by Emma Donoghue. I agree with ivylady in the fact that it'll cause a lot of discussion.

kidsfromfame Thu 06-Oct-11 20:25:19

Hi

I'm in Harpenden, and would love to join a book club. Can travel, and am happy with evening meet ups. I've read Enduring Love, but not Sepulchre or Room.

Am I in?!

ivylady Thu 06-Oct-11 21:50:10

Hi - So 'Room' seems like a good choice. Shall we name a date then? Do we need to look a bit further ahead to give everyone a chance to read the book? Or is 20th October a good date?

April81 Fri 07-Oct-11 21:49:29

I'm fine with the 20th.

milaj Sat 08-Oct-11 23:37:43

Hi! I am ok with the choice of book, but due to moving houses next week it is most likely that I won't be able to read the book on time. Any chance we can postpone it for a week or so??

Thanks x

HalleLouja Sun 09-Oct-11 09:21:30

Can we do first week of November?

ivylady Sun 09-Oct-11 09:47:16

Yes that suits me better as well - what about Thursday 3rd November?

kidsfromfame Sun 09-Oct-11 12:17:31

Hi, I can do 3 November.

April81 Sun 09-Oct-11 18:16:27

Hi, I'm fine with the 3rd of nov as well. So to summarize:

Book: 'Room' by Emma Donoghue. Date of first meeting: 3rd of November
Venue:TBC
Time:TBC

Am I correct in thinking that Harpenden is the best choice for all?

NKfe1272cX1158161fcc2 Mon 10-Oct-11 12:38:50

Can't make the 20th - husband might object, given it is our 10th wedding anniversary! But if every one else is free and wants to go ahead then, please do - but let me know the next book and meet up date!

HalleLouja Mon 10-Oct-11 14:21:06

April am happy with that plan.

ivylady Tue 11-Oct-11 22:25:38

Oh no - now I can't make the 3rd November, but please go ahead and maybe I can join next session.

milaj Tue 11-Oct-11 22:39:15

Hi!

I am ok with the book choice but won't have enough time to read it before the suggested date - just moved houses yesterday. Is there any chance we could postpone it for a week or so?

Cheers

milaj Tue 11-Oct-11 22:43:55

Please ignore my previous message. I missed the second page. 3rd of november fine by me too.

April81 Wed 12-Oct-11 10:14:18

Is Harpenden suitable for all?

HalleLouja Wed 12-Oct-11 11:33:49

Yes. Need to order the book now.

April81 Wed 12-Oct-11 23:07:50

Ok..Harpenden it is then.

April81 Mon 24-Oct-11 21:27:37

Hi All,

Does anyone have any sugesstions on where to meet in Harpenden?

There's Costa and Cafe Nero and some other local coffee shops. I think most are open until 6.00/7.00 p.m. during the week days.

There's also The Harpenden Arms,The Slug and Lettuce and The George for pubs...

kidsfromfame Wed 26-Oct-11 14:28:43

Hi April81

Do you think it would be best to meet in a pub, as you say,- coffee shops close quite early in the evening.

I'm new to Harpenden, so haven't actually sampled any of the local pubs yet. Do you have a preference on any that you have listed? A quieter one, perhaps? I'm not sure loud music would encourage our discussion.......!

April81 Fri 28-Oct-11 15:38:05

Hi kidsfromfame,

I haven't been to many of the pubs in Harpenden either..but have noticed the The Harpenden Arms tends to get pretty busy. If it's ok with everyone shall we try The George?? smile

kidsfromfame Tue 01-Nov-11 14:34:54

Hi April81,

It's all gone very quiet on this thread.

Is anyone else still up for Thursday?

April81 Tue 01-Nov-11 16:33:02

Hi, I'm not really sure what happened...there were a few others who were interested in meeting up on Thursday. I'm still up for it...do you think we should just go ahead and hope ( fingers crossed) we get a few more responses tomorrow??

ivylady Tue 01-Nov-11 20:01:36

Hi - still interested in joining the book club, I just can't do this Thursday,

kidsfromfame Wed 02-Nov-11 13:59:36

Hi april81 and ivylady

Well, seeing as ivylady suggested Room, shall we see if the three of us (and anyone else who wishes!) can meet up one evening next week instead? Do you have any windows in your diaries? Or maybe you're both much busier than me!?

April81 Wed 02-Nov-11 15:29:41

Hi both, what about the 10th of novemeber?

kidsfromfame Thu 03-Nov-11 09:10:26

Hi. 10th is good for me.

eggandtoastedsoldiers Sun 06-Nov-11 11:35:19

I love to join in too, I'm in Harpenden as well

April81 Sun 06-Nov-11 23:47:05

Hi eggsandtoastedsoldiers, Can you make it on the 10th of November?

ivylady Thu 10-Nov-11 22:22:54

Oh dear, sorry just picked up on this again having been swamped with other stuff. Did you manage to meet up tonight?

HalleLouja Sat 12-Nov-11 20:53:09

I am slowly getting my evenings back with my nearly 6 month old. So just need to get the book and I might be there.

libramumoftwo Sun 13-Nov-11 23:29:59

Hello .. sorry to interrupt your bookclub but I may be interested! We are hoping to move to Harpenden/ Redbourn/ Wheathampstead in Jan/Feb and as you ladies live there, I wondered if you had any advice? Hubby wants easy access to the fast trains so loves Harpenden, however I crave countryside and a smaller location and hence I'm looking outside! We have two boys, one age 4 and one 11mths. Any tips? All going well, I may end up in the bookclub :D Sorry to add to thread, but plan to view homes this week hence on a big drive for info.
I've just posteed a relevant thread if you'd like to replly to that instead .. and keep this one for the bookclub! Thanks so much!

katestalbans Mon 06-Feb-12 12:35:38

hi, did you get a book club started? i am interested if you did. thanks

RachieJosie Wed 08-Feb-12 17:25:02

Hi there, moving to St Albans at end of April and would love to join a reading group. If you are still after new members I would love to join.

HalleLouja Fri 09-Mar-12 09:22:47

Think this died.

winterberry Wed 04-Apr-12 21:48:31

Can we revive this thread? Anyone still interested??

juneau Thu 05-Apr-12 14:06:21

I would be interested too if this group still meets? If not, could we start a new one? I'd love to have a reason to actually read a whole book each month grin

HalleLouja Thu 05-Apr-12 15:00:29

I am reading Room can we do it please. Its a bit odd so far.

juneau Thu 05-Apr-12 15:02:10

I've read 'Room', so am happy to discuss it.

winterberry Thu 05-Apr-12 21:52:55

Juneau,HalleLouja,
I've read the book as well. I know it's just the three of us, but shall we go ahead and set a date to meet? What do you think?

HalleLouja Sat 07-Apr-12 17:52:49

Can do.

Can't do Tues or Thursday nights. Where shall we go??

I am in Wheathampstead.

HalleLouja Sat 07-Apr-12 17:53:30

You are going to have to give me a couple of weeks to read it grin

edam Sat 07-Apr-12 18:15:02

ooh, I'm in Harpenden, would love to join a book club and have read Room - can I join in?

Only problem is I don't drive but could get a lift from dh if you want to meet in Redbourn or Wheathampstead.

juneau Mon 09-Apr-12 14:16:26

Am happy to set a date and I do drive! Definitely can't do this week as DH is away on business, but shall we try the week starting 23rd?

How about Weds 25th - does that work for everyone?

RachieJosie - will you be here by then? If not, perhaps we could do the week after.

kidsfromfame Thu 12-Apr-12 10:01:04

Hello! I joined this thread further up, and am still keen to find a book club. I'm in Harpenden, and can drive if needed.

Weds are good for me. I read half of Room, so can pick up where I left off...

edam Sat 14-Apr-12 13:18:57

Weds 25th would be fine - where would be the best place to meet?

juneau Sat 14-Apr-12 13:40:57

Well since two of you are from Harpenden, shall we have our first meeting there? Is there somewhere on the High St that might work? I don't often go to Harpenden to eat or drink so my mind's a bit a blank.

And what time works - around 8pm? I don't think I can get there any earlier than that.

winterberry Sat 14-Apr-12 19:10:05

Hi all, I'm fine for the 25th as well. I'm not sure about pubs because of the noise issue, has anyone been to 'the George' in harpenden? Or what about the pizza express?

HalleLouja Sat 14-Apr-12 19:37:33

I can't do 25th but you all meet and I will come next time.

You should get a table / seat in the George. The Cock Inn is nice too.

edam Sat 14-Apr-12 20:12:27

The George is fine unless there's a big football match on, then they have the TV up loud (I don't know the first thing about football so no idea if there's anything on).

Cock Inn is fine and very easy for anyone to spot - on the high street, past Sainsbury's (if you are coming from St Albans) and on the other side of the road.

kidsfromfame Sun 15-Apr-12 12:47:09

I agree that The Cock Inn is likely to be quieter than The George.

edam Sun 15-Apr-12 16:51:21

ooh it sounds like this is actually going to happen! What time - 8pm? And we are talking about Room, yes?

winterberry Sun 15-Apr-12 19:46:58

I can do 7/8. Whats best for everyone else? And how are we going to identify each other?

juneau Sun 15-Apr-12 21:41:48

Shall we try The Cock then? Perhaps the first one to arrive could put their copy of 'Room' on the table in a conspicuous spot?

MaSeKo Sun 15-Apr-12 22:07:38

Hi all, this is great.

I was just thinking for the last few days that I wanted to join a book club in Harpenden and today that I had some time to look for it I found this thread.

I would very much like to join you if that's ok.

I live in Harpenden for the last 3 years or so and I agree the Cock Inn will be quite nice. Have not read the Room yet but I will have by the 25th. Around 8 will be great for me and will bring the book so that we get to recognise each other.

HalleLouja Mon 16-Apr-12 18:08:56

I am definitely up for the next meet but am out quite a bit next week so can't do.

edam Mon 16-Apr-12 18:17:47

Like the idea of the conspicuous book but my copy's on a kindle. grin Look for the woman with the red kindle and very curly brown hair...

HalleLouja Tue 17-Apr-12 13:23:22

Can you not reserve a table maybe.....

Dragontrainer Tue 17-Apr-12 16:22:32

I'd love to join you if that's OK! Provided babysitting works out (also known as DH getting himself home from work on time!), I should be able to make it next week . . .

katestalbans Wed 18-Apr-12 10:50:42

well done ladies on reviving the thread and making a plan. i'd love to join in too. have ordered the book and will work on the babysitter. 8pm next wed in the cock in harpenden. hope to see you there and then.

kidsfromfame Wed 18-Apr-12 12:50:24

Yep, I'm in too. See you next week.

juneau Wed 18-Apr-12 14:08:48

Oh this is great! So glad there are quite a few who can come.

I think I'd better re-read 'Room'. Just realised I can't remember as much of it as I thought.

edam Wed 18-Apr-12 23:22:35

Yup, I need to refresh my acquaintance as well... either that or find the grown-up book club equivalent of York notes! grin

winterberry Thu 19-Apr-12 11:59:27

If anyone from Redbourn needs a lift, would be happy to pick them up!

gp Thu 19-Apr-12 19:37:50

hi there did this book club get going ? i'm interested in joining thx

edam Thu 19-Apr-12 22:42:46

Yup, at The Cock, Harpenden High Street, Weds 25th, 8pm. Bring a copy of Room so we stand a chance of spotting each other.

edam Tue 24-Apr-12 17:36:56

Hi everyone, just bumping for tomorrow!

Dragontrainer Wed 25-Apr-12 20:13:53

Grrr, husband has just sent a text to say that his flight is late and there is a huge queue at passport control, so he won't be back for ages. Tempting though it may be to leave the sleeping seven year old in charge of the younger two, it means I'm not going to be able to make tonight. Please let me know the next book and venue and I'll improve the quality of nagging to see if I can get the husband home on time! Hope you all had /have fun discussing the book!

juneau Thu 26-Apr-12 08:11:36

Sorry you couldn't make it Dragon. The next meeting will be Weds 23rd May at 8pm, The Old Cock Inn, Harpenden.

The book is 'The Marriage Plot' by Jeffrey Eugenides.

edam Thu 26-Apr-12 09:47:12

had a great time last night, really enjoyed meeting everyone. Look forward to seeing you next time, Dragon!

HalleLouja Thu 26-Apr-12 13:26:23

Book ordered.

Will be there.

winterberry Thu 26-Apr-12 20:57:53

Hi all, I was soo looking forward for this, but came down with a bad ear infection two days before the 24th :-(. I'm getting the book and will be there for the next one....

juneau Mon 30-Apr-12 14:56:31

For anyone who's interested in the Children's Book Festival at Luton Hoo on 20th May:

www.lutonhoowalledgarden.org.uk/ChildrensFestival.html

Coffeeandcookie Sat 26-May-12 18:34:34

Did this meeting take place? If so, can you let me know the date of the next meeting and the book title pls?

katestalbans Tue 29-May-12 11:30:07

yes, onto book three. The Thread by Victoria Hislop, wed 4th july 8pm cock inn, harpenden. see you there!

Coffeeandcookie Tue 29-May-12 21:18:46

Thank you katestalbans. Need to order the book now!

Dancinmama Mon 11-Jun-12 12:46:25

Hi ladies,
I'mmoving to St Albans at the end of July and would be really interested in joining in with you if that's possible? I love reading and think a book group would be a good way to motivate me to read rather than watch tv in the evening! I'd also like to meet other mums in St Albans. Will you be meeting in August onwards?

edam Tue 03-Jul-12 22:10:20

Hi everyone, apologies, I'm afraid I'm having to go to a work do tomorrow so will have to miss this one. Sorry! Do post here to say what the next book is.

HalleLouja Wed 04-Jul-12 21:07:18

I would be interested in coming now that I have rediscovered reading. Am now reading the Illiad by Homer. But I would be interested in knowing what you are all reading.

juneau Mon 09-Jul-12 08:59:57

Hi edam, we missed you this month!

The next book is 'The Tiger's Wife' by Tea Obreht. Meeting is Weds 8th August. Usual place.

katestalbans Tue 07-Aug-12 08:43:30

my apologies for tomorrow. enjoy discussing the book. apologies also from helen. Kate

edam Tue 07-Aug-12 13:44:11

thanks Kate, we will miss you both! What did you think of the book?

MaSeKo Wed 08-Aug-12 15:31:37

My apologies for tonight. Enjoy discussing the book. Please post details of the next book and meeting details. Many thanks. Matina

edam Fri 10-Aug-12 14:38:25

Ooh, just finished The Tiger's Wife. Now dying to have that conversation with those of you who had already finished about 'why does the apothecary do what he does?'

Next meet is 5 September at the Cock on the main road in Harpenden, guess same time (8pm) and book is The Invisible Ones by Steph Penny.

HelenJV Sun 02-Sep-12 18:56:16

Hi There,

I've just come across your thread, and would be really interested in hearing if you are looking for any new members?

I've quite recently moved to Harpenden with my Husband, and although I don't have any kids (yet!) I would be really interested in joining a book group in the local area - I love reading, and would be keen to get to know a few people in Harpenden.

Could you let me know if it would be OK for me to maybe come along to one of your meetings with a view to joining?

Many thanks

Helen

kidsfromfame Mon 03-Sep-12 18:59:02

Hi Helen

You're very welcome to join us. As Edam says above, we're meeting on Weds at 8pm in the Cock Inn. If the weather's nice, we might be in the garden.... Hope you can make it.

edam Thu 06-Sep-12 13:23:15

eek, so sorry everyone, was working late and missed the meet-up yesterday. apologies - hope you didn't wait for me. We MUST swap mobile numbers so I can let you know if I get held up again! Please let me know what book you've chosen next and what date we are getting together.

Sorry!

juneau Thu 06-Sep-12 13:37:37

We missed those of you who couldn't make it this month. Next meet up is Wed 3rd Oct, usual time and place. The book is 'Tender is the Night' by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

edam Thu 06-Sep-12 13:52:23

Fab, thanks Juneau - just need to check my school governors' meeting has been re-arranged but hope to be with you.

katestalbans Wed 03-Oct-12 18:27:39

hope you all have fun this evening. afraid i won't be with you. edam just called to say that she is running late but will be there tonight. enjoy! xx

Dragontrainer2 Wed 14-Nov-12 16:29:01

Hi there. I have the joys of a parents evening tonight, so it looks like I'll have to miss tonight. Shame, as I would have loved to hear what others thought of the book - I wanted to like it, but didn't! Let me know the arrangements for next month; as long as it is not the 12th or 13th I'll be there! Have fun tonight!

juneau2 Wed 14-Nov-12 22:37:48

I'm afraid it is Dec 12th - anything else was too close to Christmas. Sorry you won't be able to make it. Hope some of the other regulars will be able to. The book is 'The Other Hand' by Chris Cleave. The Old Cock Inn, 8pm.

MrsMallow Thu 15-Nov-12 00:08:19

Anyone mind me joining in?

juneau2 Thu 15-Nov-12 18:12:43

Mrs Mallow, you'd be very welcome smile

Oh and dragon, we were all united in our dislike of last month's book!

Dragontrainer2 Tue 04-Dec-12 10:46:01

Juneau - thanks for filling me in on the details; you are very efficient (in contrast to me, who has been meaning to post to say thank you for a while, but failing miserably!) Hope you all have a good time next week and have a fab festive period - hopefully I'll manage to catch up with you in January when the manic Christmas period is over!

juneau2 Thu 13-Dec-12 11:20:05

Next month's book is 'The Sense of an Ending' by Julian Barnes. Our meeting will be held on Weds 9th Jan, usual time and place. Happy Christmas!

Magdalena11 Sun 06-Jan-13 16:59:18

Hi, have you got any room for new members in your book club?

juneau2 Mon 07-Jan-13 20:44:20

Come along Magdalena - you'd be very welcome. Details of the next meeting are above.

Magdalena11 Mon 07-Jan-13 23:32:25

Thanks!

juneau2 Thu 10-Jan-13 12:37:36

Just thought I would mention that this month's book is 20p on Amazon today if you've got a Kindle.

HelenJV2 Sat 12-Jan-13 13:00:01

Hi Ladies,

Just wanted to let you all know that the book for next month's meeting is 'The hundred year old man who climbed out of a window and disappeared', by Jonas Jonasson. We are due to meet in the usual place / time on February 20th.

See you all then x x

roundwood Mon 21-Jan-13 16:44:43

Hi, finally had a chance to talk to my book editor about Sense of An Ending - she called it 'tiresome' and said we are entirely right that it's not much cop. Nice to know we weren't all missing something!

roundwood Mon 25-Feb-13 20:37:01

Hi everyone

I know we are reading Still Alice for next time but just saw a whole slew of reviews for the other book I mentioned, The Handsome Brute - all very positive. Times, Sunday Times, Obs, and so on. Thought it was interesting - at least I wasn't going mad by actually enjoying something in that genre!

ali26672 Mon 04-Mar-13 13:00:37

Hello everyone!

As with a few posters on this thread, I have just moved to Harpenden with my husband and two small children. I love to read and would love to join a book club in the area and meet new people. Is it ok to come along to one of your get togethers sometime soon?

Many thanks,
Ali

HelenJV2 Fri 08-Mar-13 11:28:45

Hi Ali,

You would be very welcome to join us - as roundwood said we are currently reading Little Alice.

We are next due to meet in the Old Cock Inn on the High Street at 8pm on 27th March, and you can spot us as we are usually the only group of 6-7 ladies with books / kindles on the tables!

Hope to see you there and welcome to the area!

Helen

Excellent! I assume you mean Still Alice by the way. I look forward to meeting everyone on the 27th March.

Dragontrainer2 Sat 09-Mar-13 12:07:53

Yes, it is Still Alice not Little Alice - hope you enjoy it (if "enjoy" is the right word; I cried buckets!) Hopefully see you in March!

Maplesyrup75 Tue 05-Nov-13 13:36:49

Hi, I'm keen to make some local friends but I am a bit daunted about turning up to book club, do you all share contact details so that if I'll have an idea who I am looking for? I assume the next date is 27th October?

Maplesyrup75 Tue 05-Nov-13 13:39:04

Sorry, read November!

juneau2 Tue 05-Nov-13 18:11:10

Maple please don't be scared - you're very welcome to come along. We try to have a copy of the book on the table, although we don't always manage this, but if we know you're coming we'll keep an eye out for someone looking lost.

And yes, thanks for noticing my typo. Next meeting is 27th November.

Dragontrainer2 Mon 18-Nov-13 14:09:22

Really sorry, but it looks as if I won't be able to make it next week as DH will be away with work. Let me know which book and venue you choose for the next meet up and I should be there. Have fun!

Willaby Tue 19-Nov-13 15:58:12

Hi - I'm the Mumsnet Herts Local Editor. This is a great thread. Would it be possible for you to add your group to our Meet-Up section, as well? http://local.mumsnet.com/hertfordshire/meet-ups We're putting a lot of resources into our Local sites and Meet-Ups are a great way to get Mums knowing more about local happenings. Also, if there are any of you that would be interested in becoming a Mumsnet Local Ambassador for your area do let me know...email me on hertfordshire@mumsnetlocal.com Thanks!

juneau2 Thu 28-Nov-13 10:53:53

SophieStockdale Tue 11-Feb-14 13:14:58

Hi. This might be a bit cheeky but I have just moved to Redbourn and was keen to join a book group, the only issue is that I have no children yet, but wonder if you had space for a non mum to join? Thanks

Dragontrainer2 Wed 12-Feb-14 19:41:27

No children = no problem! You'd be more than welcome to join; kids are in no way a pre-requisite!

Hope to see you in the Old Cock later in the month - there's usually at least one of us with the book on the table so you can recognise us!

roundwood Wed 26-Feb-14 19:22:36

Hi afraid I can't make tonight hope you all have fun.

juneau2 Thu 27-Feb-14 17:17:07

Our next book group will be Weds 26th March @ The Old Cock, Harpenden

Avenues Sun 09-Mar-14 00:17:06

How many people in this book group? And are you taking new joiners?

juneau2 Sun 09-Mar-14 13:36:41

New joiners are welcome Avenue. If you want to come along, just read the book and turn up on the night. We usually try to have a copy of the book on the table so we're easy to spot. We have anything from about three to eight members each month - it depends who's around.

Dragontrainer2 Wed 26-Mar-14 12:51:12

Looks unlikely that I will be able to make it tonight, as DH is having the week from hell at work and would consider getting in from the office at midnight an early night! If by some miracle he does materialise in time to look after the little ones, I'll see you there . . .

juneau2 Fri 28-Mar-14 17:49:31

We missed you dragon! Hope to see you next month.

HappyHaggis Fri 11-Apr-14 12:53:17

Afternoon all

I recently moved to Harpenden and found this thread online. Are you accepting new members? I'd love to join - the group sounds wonderful. Unfortnately I wouldn't be able to make your next meeting on 30 April, but hopefully I could make May. Many thanks smile

juneau2 Sat 12-Apr-14 07:47:28

New joiners are welcome Haggis. Just keep an eye on this thread, read the book and show up!

HappyHaggis Sat 12-Apr-14 09:31:13

Brilliant - will do, thank you.

roundwood Mon 28-Apr-14 14:48:04

Hi, afraid ds has now got a choir concert on Weds so I can't make it. Shame! See you next time.

Sorry you couldn't make it roundwood - I hope the choir concert was good!

Our next meeting will be on Weds 11th June at the Old Cock.

The book is 'The Railway Man' by Eric Lomax.

roundwood Sat 03-May-14 10:21:06

THanks Juneau, it was but First Capital Connect nearly made me miss it - had to grab a cab despite leaving work early and made it with seconds to spare. No idea why school always give us such short notice, they must have been planning it for more than a week!

Hope you had fun and see you next time.

juneau2 Sat 03-May-14 17:30:08

Oh, dear old FCC eh! We missed you this month, so hopefully trains and school calendars will behave in June.

Katiewoodles20 Sat 10-May-14 17:08:21

Hi All,

I have just come upon your thread whilst looking for a book club in my local area. Your group seems just what I was looking for and I was wondering if you are allowing new members. I see your next meeting is June 11th 8pm in The old Cock and you are reading "The Railway Man" is this correct?
Many Thanks

Katiewoodles20 Sat 10-May-14 20:37:07

Also... Does it matter if I am not a mum. Just asking as this is on a mums network. Many Thanks
Kate

juneau2 Sun 11-May-14 17:33:07

You're welcome to join us katie. Just read the book and come along! We try to have a copy of the book on the table to make us more easily identifiable and motherhood is not a requirement grin

HelenJV2 Wed 21-May-14 20:34:25

Hi Ladies,
It's been a long time since I last came along - have been busy with the arrival of my daughter, but am now finally feeling ready to get sometime for me back! Would it be ok if I rejoined?
