The London Assembly held a meeting yesterday on school places in the capital which might be of interest to Merton mumsnetters.

Our guests included Yvette Stanley, Director of the Dept of Children, Schools and Famillies at Merton Council. Our Education Panel heard how:

-There will be a cumulative shortage of 118,000 school places across the capital up until 2016
-The crisis in school places in the capital is being fuelled by a sustained growth in birth rate, more families staying in London and larger families
-There will be a big rise in demand for secondary school places in London for the next 10 years
-Extra capital funding is £1bn less than London needs to address the school places shortfall
