Green Space - Judith Kerr(2 Posts)
Saw this on Lambeth site - good for Southwark too:
We petition Southwark Council to re-designate the playing field at Judith Kerr Primary School to 'Playing Fields' and 'Local Green Space', to protect it from being developed. Sign the petition help us save the green space for the children chn.ge/1O4JT9L
Here is an update to the change.org Petition:
We are awaiting the publication of The New Southwark Plan and hope that with your support, the designation of Judith Kerr Primary School as 'open space' will be officially approved. However, whist we are awaiting confirmation of the designation, The Dulwich Estate who owns the freehold to the school grounds, intends to develop the greenspace for its subsidiary, the Dulwich Almshouse Charity. It aims to build replacement almshouses comprised of assisted living accommodation for up to 20 elderly residents.
This development is proposed on the playing field of our primary school and the 350 schoolchildren would as a result lose 2/3 of their already tight outdoor play and sports space and all of the school’s usable green space. Attached is a sketch of the proposed development.
If you are local to JKPS, we encourage you to attend one of these events to form your own opinion about the proposals. The events will take place on: Wednesday 8th June from 4pm to 7:30 and on Saturday 11th June from 2pm to 4pm at the Methodist Church on Half Moon Lane, opposite the school.
The greenspace campaign is led by parents of children at JKPS and fully supports the Dulwich Almshouse Charity’s need for new accommodation. However, we have been informed by the Dulwich Almshouse charity that they have been asking and waiting for a new site for 10 years, and that The Dulwich Estate has only now offered the site at the school. We believe that as The Dulwich Estate is a substantial local landowner, they can find an alternative more suitable site for the almshouses and that taking away a state school’s only playing field is not a good solution. We are therefore campaigning strongly against this development. The designs for the new development will be uploaded to the charity’s website on 8th June: www.dulwichalmshousecharity.org
We have put together a gofundme account to raise fund for the campaign to help fund an alternative planning application to protect the greenspace for the school. Any funds not used for the campaign will fund play equipment for the school. www.gofundme.com/savethegreenspace
