Berkshire

Nestled in the heart of the Home Counties, yet with many of its towns just a short train ride from London, Berkshire offers a mix of rural and urban places to visit and is home to a wealth of family friendly attractions and days out.

Historic Royal Windsor spoils visitors for choice, boasting two of the UK's top 20 visitor attractions: Windsor Castle and LEGOLAND Windsor Resort. Kids will love watching the changing of the guard before exploring the Castle or taking a ride on the Giant Wheel. Other sights within a stone's throw of Windsor include Eton College, Savill Garden and Ascot and Windsor Racecourses.

If the Great British weather is getting the better of you, some excellent undercover family days out can be found, ranging from The Living Rainforest near Newbury to Bracknell's Look Out Discovery Centre. And for those days when the sun does put in an appearance, families can choose to get lost in the maze at the Cliveden estate, with its tranquil riverside setting, or take a woodland walk and visit the adventure playground in the surprisingly named California Country Park near Wokingham. In the summer months, period drama fans can visit Highclere Castle near Newbury, setting for Downton Abbey.

West Berkshire is a picturesque rural area, with excellent fishing in the River Kennet, country rambles across the Berkshire Downs or relaxing trips on the Kennet and Avon Canal. On top of this, the area also offers some lovely country villages to explore, such as Lambourn with its racing heritage and Hungerford, known for its extensive antique shops. Bargain hunters will also find great free days out ranging from Donnington Castle to Greenham Common and Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre.
