The Halcyon Midwifery Birth Centre

Smethwick and Oldbury

disabled access

The Halcyon Midwifery Birth Centre opened in Smethwick, West Birmingham in 2011, as a stand-alone facility.

It is a purpose-built centre that looks and feels more like a spa than an NHS hospital, with a focus on helping expectant mothers to be calm and relaxed. The Halcyon is for low-risk births.

There is a fixed, under-lit birthing pool in each suite, glider chairs, birthing balls, and overhead sensory lighting. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, flat-screen TV, i-pod dock, and there is access to a garden for fresh air.

There is a fully-equipped kitchen and a dining area.

The whole, rather beautiful, centre has been designed by consultant midwife Kathryn Gutteridge to give women access to a safe place to give birth. It is run by Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust.
