Den-building Parties at Lickey Hills

Northfield, Longbridge and Rubery

disabled access

The ranger team at Lickey Hills will help organise a great party for youngsters who like to be outdoors.

You can hire the School Room (just outside the Visitor Centre) as a base, and a ranger to take a group of children on a treasure hunt, fairy hunt, bug trail or den-building - depending on the season and the child's interests.

Then you can return to the School Room for a party meal and games.

    27-Apr-2014 Report

This was the best party we'd ever organised.

Our 7-year-old likes sword-fighting and making dens, so we booked a Robin Hood-themed party here, with den-building as the main event.

The weather forecast was dire and I was worried that it would be a disaster, but I needn't have lost any sleep. The School Room is spacious and down-to-earth and would have accommodated us for indoor games etc if necessary, but as the ranger breezily assured me the day before, the kids weren't at all worried about the downpours.

The friendly rangers were excellent with the kids, and were joined by some enthusiastic Duke of Edinburgh volunteers. The children were very soon working as a team to find logs and massive sticks and over an hour and a bit, built a big den which a dozen on them could easily sit in, complete with bear traps, escape routes and sentry posts. Excellent! Tarpaulins were supplied to keep out the rain.

The School Room is a bit basic, but the team had thoughtfully turned the heaters on in advance and supplied us with kettles. And they let us in the room from 9.30am on a Sunday to decorate it with balloons and tablecloths etc and it soon looked the part.

The whole experience was so happy, the staff so relaxed and positive, we'd definitely do one of these parties again. I'd say the parents would have to be prepared to get stuck in, though. All the adults who stayed joined in the den-building and helped out, which made it lots of fun. Everyone said how fantastic it was to be outside (rather than in a hectic soft play venue) and the boys behaved brilliantly, even though they were armed to the hilt with swords and bows and arrows.

We paid under £100 for School Room hire plus 2 hours with a ranger, and felt it was good value for money. The pricing is under review at the moment so do check when you enquire.
