Pony club is a very good way of teaching children the basics of how to look after a pony and the basics of riding a pony.
The children get allocated their own pony for the morning and learn how to groom their pony, tack them up and then they go on a hour hack down the river or round the country lanes. They are shown the correct position to sit in, how to hold the reins and how to make the pony stop and go.
They also learn the basics of the non-riding side of looking after their pony and help with the poo-picking, mucking out, making the feeds, giving the ponies hay and water. They also learn how to lead a pony, how to put a pony in a horsebox, how to put a rug and headcollar on and how to know if their pony is ill.
