A taste of the country on the edge of the city, Gibside has one toe in County Durham with the rest of the vast historic estate in neighbouring Tyne and Wear.

Enjoy the panoramic views of the Derwent Valley, walk the winding paths and open spaces, and explore the elegant buildings and ruins.

Gibside is a Georgian 'grand design' on a spectacular scale, the vision of coal baron George Bowes. Architectural treasures and working buildings tell the story of this once grand estate. Gibside is also a haven for wildlife with red kites often circling in the skies above.

After centuries of decline, Gibside is being restored for people and nature. Enjoy regular events, miles of tranquil walks, secluded picnic spots or family fun at the adventure play area and woodland play trail.

Food lovers will love the bustling walled garden, cafe, local farm shop and a twice monthly farmers' market.
