Clearwell Caves, Nr Coleford, Forest of Dean, GL16 8JR
Mon-Fri, Sat, Sun, 10am-4pm
Clearwell Caves are a natural cave system, extensively mined for iron ore to make some of Britain's most complex and oldest mine workings. The mine dates back well over 4,500 years, when Neolithic miners dug for ochre pigments to make paints. Iron ore miners later created a warren of underground passageways, connecting the huge caverns.
Explore nine of the atmospheric caverns, experiencing their ancient and mysterious past. You can see why television programmes like Dr Who and Merlin have been filmed here many times. You walk through exciting, sometimes eerie, and impressive caverns, following in the footsteps of generations of miners, that also included young children. You may even catch a glimpse of the 'Old Man' that miners believed haunted the Caves - there have been lots of sightings by visitors!
