A quintessentially English country house set in undulating gardens with romantic views from the terrace over the South Downs, Hinton Ampner comes into its own in spring, with cheery colour from hundreds of daffodils. The gardens, with terraced lawns and quirky topiary, are dotted with the deliciously scented pink and white heads of viburnum, whilst the pretty Kitchen Garden is full of forget-me-nots, perfumed narcissi and tulip blooms. Its fresh produce is used in Hinton's little tea room; try savoury scones, comforting one-pot lunches, and delectable cakes.

Younger visitors can discover secret places on one of Hinton's free family trails. Pick one up from Reception or download a copy before you leave home – www.nationaltrust.org.uk/hinton-ampner. Hinton's woods and parkland are the perfect place to tick den-building and kite flying off our ‘50 things to do before you're 11¼' list!
