The Red Hedgehog is an independently run small concert and theatre space, diagonally opposite Highgate Tube Station. Its concert salon is available for rehearsals by professional musicians.
Since opening, on 7 October, 2006, the venue has presented mainly classical concerts and fringe theatre.
Where the name comes from…
The Red Hedgehog takes its name and inspiration from a famous 19th century coffee house in Vienna, Zum Roten Igel, the regular haunt of many composers of the period. Celebrated carousers included Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn and especially Brahms (who refused to eat or drink anywhere else.) The Red Hedgehog (Vienna) evokes food, drink, conviviality and lively conversation.
The Red Hedgehog (Highgate) adds a fine grand piano and the thrill of top-class live chamber music-making in a setting which provides an especially close rapport between performers and audience.
