The Swallow Bakery at the Rose offers a spacious, relaxing environment to meet up with friends or somewhere to escape the bustle of the town.
The Swallow Bakery is also great and welcoming place for parents. We have groups for babies and toddlers across the week including the ever popular Rhyme Time every Monday morning from 11.15am. So if you want a break from shopping or work come and visit Kingston's most unique and welcoming venue. You don't have to be a theatre goer to visit - so pop in and say hello.
A breakfast and lunch menu are available as well as a tantalising range of light bites cakes and pastries throughout the day and early evening.
Open from 10am-late Monday to Friday, and from 11am-late on Saturdays, (5pm on non-show days) we are renowned for our wide selection of fair-trade coffee and our tantalising range of sandwiches, quiches, light bites cakes & pastries.
Having been to The Rose many times for rhyme time sessions and theatre productions but not actually eaten there, we were intrigued to review the new menu at The Swallow Bakery.
We went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon (2 adults and 2 under 5) when everywhere else in Kingston was rammed and there were only a handful of other customers in there. It is an ideal venue for a family lunch in town, with plenty of space for children to walk around and a dedicated area for play while they wait for their food. It was relaxing and calm compared to other cafes where you are crammed into your seats for the duration and feel compelled to keep the noise down. The other bonus of The Swallow Bakery forming part of The Rose is the facilities – plenty of clean toilets and baby changing and lots of comfy chairs to relax in if you are just choosing a coffee and pastry.
The Swallow Bakery name seems misleading as although there are a number of delicious cakes and pastries, there are 3 full menus available, serving food from 11am-4pm Mon-Sun but not on Tuesdays.
We chose 2 meals from their Little People's Menu, 1 from Breakfast and 1 from Lunch and couldn't fault any of them. Particular highlights were eggs benedict (recommended by our waitress) and the children's pancakes with maple syrup and fresh fruit. We liked that for children you could chose from meals ranging from beans on toast (£3.50) to chicken strips with skinny fries (£6.50), to suit a range of appetites. The breakfast menu was varied and exciting, with dishes ranging in price from £2.50 to £9 and for lunch (same price range), you can choose from gourmet salads, warm sandwiches/wraps/focaccia to full chicken or fish dishes. Our club sandwich at £8.95 with skinny fries was delicious.
With drinks, it was not a cheap lunch out but the venue and quality of the food definitely made it worthwhile. We wanted to keep it a hidden gem but need to share The Swallow Bakery as an ideal lunch location in Kingston, especially for parents of younger children looking to escape the chaos of a busy shopping day.
