The Chequers

If you put your history cap on you can trace the Chequers Inn back to 1540 and it's still owned by the same family today! This really is one of England's oldest pubs (or inns, if you want to be totally correct) and most of its traditions are still upheld today. Legend has it that 170 years ago the employees were overindulging in ales on the Sabbath, so the Lady of the Manor closed the inn on Sundays. The good news is that it now opens every day of the week. Old and new customers alike are welcomed in the same warm and enthusiastic way, and this is a family friendly place, so the atmosphere is ideal for anyone with children. Opening hours Monday to Saturday 11am – 11pm (Food 12pm – 9.15pm) Sunday 12pm – 6pm (Food 12pm – 5pm)
