Walker's Books

Walkers is a small, family-owned chain of general bookshops that is spread across Cambridgeshire Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Rutland. The flagship store in Stamford opened in the historic Gothic House in 1978. The listed building was the workshop of the clockmaker Thomas Rayment during the 18th century and his name is carved into a beam in the roof, which is still held together by wooden pegs. Upstairs is a grandfather clock that he made, which still chimes on the hour. Such atmospheric touches make it a dramatic location for book launches. Between the beams of the two-floor shop are around 16,000 titles, including popular new fiction paperbacks, children's books and old favourites. Sofas and rocking horses provide perching points to peruse potential purchases.
