The museum of my childhood, and now of my children, we go here each time school is out. With dinosaurs, an aquarium, space, creepy crawlies, Egyptians, a discovery centre (lots of bones and stones, stuffed, pickled and pinned things) special exhibitions, a planetarium - the museum is a gem. Oh and a cafe and of course, gift shops! Go there. Immediately. Go back often. It's brilliant I tell you.
Opposite St John's Gardens, you could take a picnic and pray to the weather gods (the cafe's not cheap!) or picnic indoors - there's a seating area for the purpose. Nearby is the Walker Art Gallery, home of the John Moores painting prize (modern), a Holbein of Henry VIII (old) so if art's your thing head over there, they've got it all (with a special section for the little ones to get arty in) and the Central Library, recently refurbished to great acclaim. The Golden Quarter of Culture, it is.
