Until Henry VIII abolished the monasteries in 1538, Merton Priory had been for 400 years one of the country's most important monastic houses. It's huge church stood on the present-day site of Sainsbury' s/Marks and Spencer hypermarket. The fascinating 12th Century foundations of its Chapter House are preserved in a special museum under the A24 Merantun Way.

Public open days for 2014 (10.00 am - 5.00 pm) include:

Open Weekend: 7 & 8th June;
William Morris Weekend: 28 & 29th June;
Archaeology Weekend: 26 & 27th July;
London Open House Weekend: 20 & 21 September.

All event are free but donations are welcome!
