Newcastle is home to the Geordies, known for their friendliness, humour and ability to go out in the depths of winter in short sleeves. The iconic Tyne Bridge welcomes you into the beautiful, elegant city of Newcastle upon Tyne, which is renowned for its wonderful Georgian architecture.

The region has been strongly associated with heavy industry in the past, but following the closure of industries such as coal mining and shipbuilding, NewcastleGateshead has reinvented itself through culture and tourism. Gateshead's Angel of the North by Antony Gormley, The Sage and The Millennium Bridge have helped boost the area's profile beyond the North East.

There is plenty to see and do in NewcastleGateshead starting with museums such as Great North Museum-Hancock, Discovery Museum and Seven Stories; the UK's first book museum. There is also the Life Science Centre, historic Castle Keep (part of the castle from which Newcastle gets its name) and numerous art galleries such as Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts, Laing, Shipley, The Biscuit Factory and Hatton gallery.

There are some fantastic green parks, from the beautifully restored Victorian Saltwell Park, picturesque Jesmond Dene, Exhibition Park and, right in the heart of the city, Leazes Park.
The National Trust's Gibside is an 18th century estate and pleasure garden, on the outskirts of Gateshead.

Newcastle has a bit of a reputation as a party city, with restaurants and bars to suit nearly everyone. The Theatre Royal, Northern Stage and a variety of comedy venues offer a more cultural nightlife than the pubs.

The area is also known for its sporting connections, St James Park is home to Newcastle United, while Gateshead host athletic events at Gateshead International Stadium. NewcastleGateshead is also the home to The Great North Run, the largest half marathon in the world.

The area knows how to shop, with Eldon Square being the UK's largest city centre shopping complex and the Metrocentre Europe's largest indoor shopping complex.
The area is surrounded by beautiful countryside and miles of stunning coastline, with many places of historical interest within easy reach.
