Thornley Woods is a lovely wood area near Rowlands Gill. There are lots of well maintained woodland paths, picnic areas and seating dotted around. The visitors centre has a cafe and toilet facilities, they also organise family friendly activities and events.
The woodland leads onto the Derwent Walk, which is great for cycling or walking and is over looked by the Gibside Estate, run by the National Trust. There are plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife at Thornley Woods, Red Squirrels, Deer and Red Kites are just a few that can be spotted. The wonderful carved creatures lurking in the woods certainly makes the walk in the woods more fun.

A great place to take the kids for a walk in the woods. Mine like to find the carved animals that you can see as you walk along the pathways. We have done a couple of events at Thornley Woods Visitor Centre and they have always been fun as well as educational.
