This complex of flooded gravel pits and islands covers 145 hectares and provides an ideal habitat for a wide range of plants, birds and other wildlife. Tracks and footpaths weave throughout the reserve and along the adjacent River Trent.

The nature reserve, established in 1966, is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is managed by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, who run frequent events, volunteering and educational activities here.

Attenborough Nature Centre, an eco-building on a spectacular peninsula site within the nature reserve, is a visitor and education centre offering a cafe, shop, classroom and venue for hire. Open 9am - 4pm daily.
