Dunwich Heath & beach

Dunwich was subsumed by the North sea many centuries and little remains other than this beautiful beach, edged by dunes and the RSPB reserve, Mimsmere, one of the UKs top nature reserves. Listen out for the songs from one of the many Nightingales that reside here.

A mile before Dunwich turn right, following signs for Dunwich Heath. Its one and a half miles to the National Trust Car Park.

A rare and precious habitat, the Heath is home to special species such as the Dartford warbler, nightjar, woodlark, ant-lion, adders and much more.

Quiet and serene, wild and dramatic, this is an inspiring visit, whatever the time of year. From July to September, the Heath is alive with colour; a patchwork of pink and purple heather and coconut-scented yellow gorse is an unmissable experience.
