An eclectic blend of drinks, food, people, atmosphere and style in the heart of Bury. The standard of service is excellent and their attentive and knowledgable staff aim to ensure every visit is a memorable one.
Benson Blakes have become home to the top burger in the UK. Winning the National Pub Food Challenge 2013 (Burger Category). They serve an extensive range of drinks including cocktails and mixed drinks, beers, ciders, wines, fresh juices and tea's or coffee at all times. Their menu caters for everyone with a range of light bites to homemade burgers and not forgetting their seasonal specials. Take the children in during the day and early evening, relax onto their leather sofa's and banquettes and dive into some of the most imaginative and succulent burgers they will ever eat. Kids portions available plus the Chuckle Factory comedy Club is based upstairs.
We eat here often and apart from the great conundrum of what to order and the perennial battle in our minds between sticking with much loved favourites or going for the fresh, we have no complaints.
Usually we go for the Benson Blakes cheeseburger with Suffolk Bacon and local cheese with buns from Gastrono-me and meat from a Bury St Edmunds butcher. They come with either sweet potato or regular potato fries, pumped up and pimped up onion rings and home made coleslaw.
Another regular order is the Pulled Pork sandwich served with the same accompaniments plus a spicy apple relish. This is sloppy, down home food to be eaten in a relaxed manner.
Non meat eaters are well catered for especially if they will eat fish- the Po Boy isn't strictly authentic not being made with breaded fried oysters but it has freshly fried breadcrumbed fish in a crispy roll. Nearly as good as its real deal namesake. Otherwise go for the Falafels, tuna burger or wide range of Panini's with regular menu fillings or off piste combinations if you ask.
My oft-eaten light lunch here is Mark's own Pate with spiced red onion chutney (recipe a close guarded secret). Served with a decent portion of bread, this inexpensive starter of less than a fiver is more than enough and thank goodness, never off the menu.
I have never met a child who turned their nose up at the Sweet Potato Fries served here. A great way to introduce a vegetable! Kids are well catered for here- plenty of space for buggies, space for restless kids to move, kids portions and kid friendly food.
Finally - don't forget Burger Wednesdays. Two meal deals.
