The original artwork of Colonel G.O. Spence, Commander of the 5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) during the First World War.
Spence - The Art of War explores the remarkable story of respected local war hero, Colonel Gilbert Ormerod Spence, through a nationally significant collection of his wartime watercolours painted on the Western Front.
This rare collection of around 50 first hand paintings, capture Spence's journey as he led the 5th DLI through some of the bloodiest First World War battles including Passchendaele and the Somme.
This immersive exhibition, brings to life the sights, sounds and even the smells of life on the battleground as well as highlighting the ‘human side of war'.
In addition to this, admission to the exhibition also admits you to the rest of the museum (tickets valid for one year after purchase) including the period Victorian street.
