    04-Aug-2015 Report

    From the editor:

To make the best of huge number of summer events happening in London, we were out every single day last week with my hardworking husband who finally took a week off. We both enjoyed becoming a full-time teacher, photographer, event and tour organiser to our two kids!

After visiting the museum of most famous bridge in the world Tower Bridge, we took a short riverside walk to PAUL's – the family-run artisan bakery and patisserie's – brand-new shop at 40 Lower Thames Street. The French chain of bakery/café restaurants was established in 1889 in the city of Croix, Northern France. I had heard about this new branch even before it was opened – they had listed it in our directory. It's located within viewing and walking distance of several famous iconic landmarks of London: Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Shard and City Hall.

The shop with black-and-white-checkered floor and decorated with plenty of grey scale images of old Paul shops on the walls has a simple interior true to its old heritage and is a good attempt to throw you back to another time.

As soon as you enter the shop, the smell of Paul's freshly baked signature range of artisan breads coming from the bakery counter will attract your senses straight away, and entice you pick up one or two to enjoy them at home.

But most importantly world-famous selection of patisserie, viennoiserie, gourmet salads, sandwiches, cakes and tarts on the counter display the best of French dessert and pastry culinary art. Accompany any of them with your choice of freshly-brewed coffee and a range of hot seasonal products including soups, croques and pizzas, and you feel much better about the world. We ordered a whole (a family size J) Moelleux Chocolat, a decadent traditional French chocolate cake, cappuccino and cold chocolate drinks. We too stayed true to our chocolate addiction! We loved the indulgent cake and continued enjoying it later at home as we couldn't finish it off. We can't wait to go back again and try Paul's other culinary masterpieces.

By the way, great idea for summer outings: you can order online Paul's beautifully packaged picnic designed for 2 or 4. Collect it in your local shop or have it delivered so that you can plan in advance for your perfect picnic day out.
