As a new parent, it was a welcome delight to discover Bongalong, and we haven't looked back…
It's hard not to comment on the quality of Bongalong by putting it in a context of high quality art education for the very youngest of babies and children. We started Bongalong when our son was just 5 weeks old. If you are looking for something that departs far from the standard fare of ‘shakers and a singalong', then look no further.
It is clear in the underlying structure of the sessions, delivered by Fiona, that progression and development is built into the planning. But at the heart of it all, is a positive and fun engagement with sound, movement, visual and social activity between children, their peers and their parents/carers. The group size is small enough for encouragement of all children within the group to contribute in a way in which they feel comfortable. The vast collection of beautiful and unusual instruments introduces the very youngest to new sounds and sights, being able to handle the instruments and delight in the unexpected.
There is a commitment to developing a peer group of parents and children, as you book a regular session on a weekly basis for a term at a time. There are under 1's and under 5's sessions. Having started with the under 1's, we now go to the under 5's sessions, with increased interaction for the children and less focus on the parents. Each week, the safe structure of familiar welcome songs leads onto new songs and activities, introducing the children to different themes through visuals, props and songs that encourage building of confidence, self-expression and creativity and ultimately good fun had by all.
The Bongalong sessions take place in Walthamstow and Chingford. Although, the sessions are structured and focused, there are always other parents who are up for a good natter after the sessions over a cup of coffee in the cafes springing up on Wood Street. Try Bonito's café for a much deserved Churros and Hot chocolate.
We have recommended Bongalong to numerous friends and they continue to thank us as they too continue to re-book each term and self-confess to having the ‘Bongalong bug'.
Bongalong is great! We have been going for about 2 years since my son was 7 months. Fiona is imaginative and fun and my son enjoys interacting with the music, dancing and stories, which change regularly. Fiona gently includes all the children and you can see how much they get out of the sessions. Children can really learn about common and more unusual instruments. Good place to meet other parents too! Recommended : )
