    12-Dec-2016 Report

A crack(l)ing curly tale of the most heartwarming kind, with a lovely message of friendship, love, faith and bravery entirely suited to both the festive season and a family audience. From the first bar, or should I say 'baaa' (as it was sung by a flock of sheep), of singing that opened the show we knew we were in for a treat and we weren't disappointed.

Not by any means panto as we traditionally know it, Babe nevertheless included many elements true to the larger than life theatrical tradition we've come to love at Christmas: audience participation, arch villains of the most evil kind (in this case 'sheep worriers'), a much loved (albeit more modern than the usual fable) children's story at its heart (The Sheep Pig by Dick King-Smith), an imperiled hero (Babe) triumphing over adversity and actors dressed up as very woolly sheep and other animals. With super catchy, sing-along songs and folksy dances, lots of comedic moments and a few dark and scary scenes, the audience was swept along on Babe's emotionally charged rollercoaster ride to literally save his own bacon.

Special mention goes to the superb puppetry (so much a fabulous and enduring feature of the Polka's in-house and visiting productions): Babe (could he have been any cuter and more characterful?); Maaa (the literally larger than life but endearing, elderly ewe) and those satanic and skeletally shocking 'sheep worrier' dog wolves (or is it wolf dogs?).

At one hour 45 mins (including interval) this seemed a slightly shorter than usual main Christmas production from the Polka Theatre. Perhaps this just reflected how enjoyable it was and how captivated we all were by Babe's adventures. That there was no wriggling or restlessness from the children in the audience is indicative of family theatre at its most engaging.

We've been enjoying Polka's high quality children's theatre for well over a decade. Babe stands out as probably the best production we've ever seen there. It's a memorable masterpiece of family entertainment which should feature on this year's Christmas/New Year 'bucket list'. Joyous and captivating, it's a play that's guaranteed to leave you with a warm glow!
