Cafe 49

Emmaus Preston supports 24 formerly homeless people, providing them with a home and a job in one of our shops.

Our city centre store on Friargate sells upycled and second hand furniture, clothing, bric-a-brac and also has a new cafe, Cafe 49, selling a range of coffee, tea, cakes and pastries.

There is a small step into the shop, which is then level to the cafe, but there are further stairs to the rest of the shop and the toilets.

A lovely, airy cafe, with huge windows on to Friargate, so brilliant for people watching. A very basic range of food and a good selection of hot drinks, as well as plenty of room for prams. The tables and chairs are all different, which gives a shabby chic atmosphere, but be aware that some of the chairs aren't as stable as others.

The toilet is up some fairly steep stairs and through a shop full of tempting little shiny things, so you will need a strong will to get toddlers through, and there are no baby changing facilities.

The staff are very friendly, and the cafe is a joy to visit as well as being conveniently located. Just try not to buy the ENTIRE shop on the way out...
